HISTORY OF NAVIGATION

• 13th – 14th-century: Vikings used polarization and the

Sunstone to allow navigation of their ships by locating the
Sun even in a completely overcast sky
• In China between 1040 and 1117, the magnetic compass
was being developed and applied to navigation
• The true mariner's compass using a pivoting needle in a dry
box was invented in Europe no later than 1300
• Nautical charts called portolan charts began to appear in
Italy at the end of the 13th century
GPS Satellites
GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)
WHAT IS GPS

• A space-based satelitte navigation system provides location

and time information in all weather
• Maintained by US government and is freely accessible by
anyone with GPS receiver.
• Consists of 30+ GPS satellites in medium Earth orbit (2000
km - 35000 km)
• Mainly used for navigation, map-making, surveying
GPS HISTORY OF GPS

• 1957 — The Soviet Union launches Sputnik I satellite.

• 1959 — The U.S. Navy builds Transit system satellites to begin

tracking submarines.

• 1974 — The first NAVSTAR test satellite is launched by the U.S.

• 1978 — The U.S. begins the launch of 11 test satellites as a part of

their Block I GPS program.

GPS HISTORY OF GPS

• In 1989 the Magellan Corp. introduced the first hand-held GPS

receiver.

• 1995 — The U.S. military declared Full Operational Capability (FOC)

of all 24 satellites in the GPS constellation.

• On March 1996 the President decided to make GPS free for civilian

users.
GPS HISTORY OF GPS

• 2004 — U.S. electronics company, Qualcomm, successfully completes

a test of live assisted GPS on a mobile phone, which allows for cellular

and GPS signals to combine for better location accuracy.

GPS GPS

• Useful night & day - rain or shine

• Use of radio waves

• Accurancy depend on unit, some are accurate to centimeter

How GPS works?

• Satellites constantly send out signals.

• A GPS receiver in your phone listens for these signals.

• Once the receiver calculates its distance from four or
more GPS satellites, it can figure out where you are.
