7 DWDM System Protection Principle (Without OPCS)

The document discusses DWDM system protection principles. It describes a DWDM system hierarchy with four layers: optical multiplexing section (OMS), optical transport section (OTS), optical channel (OCH), and optical access (OAC). It then discusses how an optical protection (OP) card implements 1+1 protection at the OMS and OCH layers by executing protection handover or recovery commands based on received optical power or commands from a network management system. The working and protection paths are switched via a handover switch on the OP card.

OP

 The OP implements the functions of line 1+1 protection of

OMS and 1+1 protection at the optical channel layer.
 According to the detected receive optical power or the forced
handover or recovery command from the NMS, the OP
executes the protection handover command or recovery
command.
 The handover and recovery are implemented via the handover
switch on the board.

Features of 1+1 Protection

 Protection line is special and cannot be shared with other

working lines.
 Signaling support is not required. It can be implemented easily.
 It can be used in any network structure (point-to-point, ring or
grid network).
 It is a restorable protection without signaling support.
 Its bandwidth utilization ratio is low and cost is high.
