INTRODUCTION – PRODUCTION PLANNING
• Production Planning is the administrative
process that takes place within a
manufacturing business,

• In these it involves making sure that sufficient
raw materials, staff and other necessary items
are procured ,

• Ready to create finished products according to

the schedule specified.
PROCESS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING
TYPES OF PRODUCTION PLANNING

1. Material production Schedule (MPS),

2. Material requirement planning (MRP),
3. Capacity plan ,
4. Work flow .
INTRODUCTION TO PRODUCTION PLANNING
& CONTROL

• Production planning and control (or PPC) is

defined as a work process which seeks to
allocate human resources, raw materials,
and equipment in a way that optimizes
efficiency,

• It enables efficiency, coordination, and the

leveraging of production-related data to drive
improvement.
BENEFITS OF PRODUCTION PLANNING &
CONTROL
• It ensures that optimum utilization of production
capacity ,

• Proper scheduling of the machine items which reduces

the idle time as well as over use,

• Inventory level are maintained at optimum levels at all

time, i.e. there is no over-stocking or under-stocking,

• Overlooks all aspects of production, quality of final

product is always maintained.
STAGES OF PRODUCTION PLANNING &
CONTROL
There are four stages of production planning :
1. Routing –
Determine the equipment, resources, materials
and sequence to be used.

2. Scheduling –
Determine when operations are scheduled.

3. Dispatching –
The scheduling plan is implemented, materials
and work orders are released, and work is flowing
down the production line.
4. Follow up –
Determine whether there are any bottlenecks
or inefficiencies in the process.

GANTT CHART
• A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart developed
as a production control tool in 1917 by Henry L.
Gantt,

• A Gantt chart provides a graphical illustration of

a schedule that can be used to plan, coordinate
and track tasks in a project.

• Gantt charts used for- 1. Progress monitoring,

2.Project management,
3. Resource management
• DOCUMENTS IN PRODUCT PLANNING &
CONTROL –
PRODUCTION IN WORK ORDER &
SCHEDULING

• Production work order-

 1. Authorizes the development of a product

2. It provides a method to create the product to

meet the specifications for the demand it is
fulfilling.

3. The work order contains a detailed routing with

run times for each step and a complete bill of
materials (BOM).
• SCHEDULING-

Scheduling is the process of arranging,

controlling and optimizing work and
workloads in a production process

Scheduling is used to allocate plant and

machinery resources, plan human resources,
plan production processes and purchase
materials.
