ANXIETY AND ACADEMIC

ACHIEVEMENT OF
GRADE 12 SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENTS IN
RESEARCH
CHANGE TITLE
INTRODUCTION

In today’s modern era, research has grown largely and has become one
of the most important tools to find solutions to every problem of
human kind and society’s needs or in the way of life as a whole.
(Proponents)They added that research becomes more comprehensive
with the emergence of new technologies opening many frontiers to
various fields such as education, business, medicine, engineering,
economics and science(Bernal, Oguan & Pinca, 2014).
 Papanastasiou as mentioned in the study of Bernal et. al. (2014)
indicates college students on the tertiary level are required to have
a research paper which is a requirement for them to receive a
baccalaureate degree which focuses in issue, topics and problems
related to their field of interest. However, according to him also
that tied with the research study is the anxiety of every student
during research classes or in the process of making it and they tend
to see research negatively.
 Ain, Ameen, Fatima, Khan, Nawaz & Shibli (2010) stated that
many studies conducted by the researchers found evident
relationship between the context of anxiety and academic
achievements of a students. In reference to this, one researcher
studied found out the anxiety can be considered a major predictor
to the success of students in terms of their academic performance.
Statement of the Problem

 What is anxiety level of students in research subject?

• Indicator
 What is the mean of the grades of students in research subject?
 Is there a significant relationship between the level of anxiety and
academic achievement of the grade 12 students in doing research?
HYPOTHESIS

 Ho: There is no significant relationship between the anxiety and

academic achievement of students in doing research.
DEFINITION OF TERMS

 Academic Achievement. This refers to a key determinant of future

educational and occupational success (Flashman, 2012).
 Academic Anxiety. This refers to the feeling of being distressed,
fearful, or stressed out as a result of school pressures (Theisen,
2013).
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

 The researcher will use a survey research. The participants for this study
are the Grade 12 Senior High School Students. The conduct of this study
will be within the School year 2017-1028.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

 The significance of the study is to find out if there is a significant relationship

between the level of academic anxiety and academic achievement of the students
in research. This study can be helpful to the following:
 Students- They are primary beneficiaries of this study so they can be aware of
their actions towards research subject and know if their doings towards the said
subject has affected their achievement of the field.
 Parents: This can aid them to know the situation of their children’s academic
status so they can be guided on what support they need to give for their children
to have a more desirable research achievement
 Teachers: This study can give knowledge to them especially research teachers
on how to handle their students in class and how they should guide them in the
process of making the research papers through finding best strategies for their
students to not be anxious and help them understand.
 Educational Administrators: They can serve as the agents of change on what to
do on particular situations and take actions if students’ behaviors or attitudes
after the system of learning.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

 As stated in a study by Dobson (2012), according to the attribution theory,

students need to fill in control over the result of an academic task. Lim (2007)
explained that students who feel more in control over the outcome have more
motivation to successfully complete the task given. Students need to understand
why a certain outcome happens for them to have control. For example, a students
who never studies for a spelling test and fails each week might not understand
the reason for the poor performance. The students will be more motivated to
study and do well on the test if the student understands that studying is important
for on the spelling tests.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

 According to Crosta (2015), anxiety is the general term of numerous disorders

that cause worrying, uneasiness, nervousness and fear. These syndromes can
affect how a person can feel and behave. People sometimes experience a general
state of worry of fear before facing something challenging such as test
examination, recital or interview which is considered as anxiety when symptoms
interfere with person’s ability to sleep or otherwise function. Generally speaking,
anxiety happens when the reaction is different is different with what might be
expected in a situation.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

ACADEMIC ANXIETY

Anxiety is complicated psychological situations which have an effect on cognitive, behavioral and psychological

states (Putman, 2010). Anxiety disorders are common mental health conditions among all children in almost every

field of their life especially in academic field. Anxiety can be classified into three sections in which academic

anxiety is situation specific form of anxiety related to academic circumstances (Tohill, & Holyoak, 2000).
Academic Anxiety

Academic anxiety has become an important topic in the educational context. Many psychologist in the field of

educational psychology have carried out researchers on academic anxiety and negative outcomes for different

levels of study (Anderson, 2007).

It has been recognized that anxiety plays a significant role in student’s learning and academic performance

(Tobias, 1979). Reilly and Lewis (1991) articulate that anxiety is hampering for young people’s academic

achievement.
Academic Anxiety

According to Chand & Lu (2007). Academic anxiety in academic institutions can have negative result on the

students if not well managed. Lee & Larson (2000) Indicates that academic anxiety is conceptualized as a state of

distress induced by a student’s appraisal of excessive academic demands. It was also suggested by Brenda and

Tillson (2010) the anxiety is said to be the primary function of academic anxiety represented by the cognitive

avoidance of threat.
Academic Anxiety

Academic anxiety can have a negative effect on student’s academic performance and achievements. (leta,

2011). Most of the studies were carried out in Western population. However, there are limited researchers on anxiety

among students in Saudi population. This research was able to have a greater concern to identify the locus of the

impact of anxiety on academic performance among the young students of Saudi Arabia.
Academic Anxiety

According to Zelazo & lyons (2012), teaching self-regulation in early childhood is important to reduce the

development of school related anxiety at an early age. Anxiety may have its negative effect on the information

processing system. Some students could hardly improve their academic performance when suffering from a

level of anxiety. It was also stated by Nelson and Hardwood (2011) that people with anxiety have difficulty in

storing and retrieving information.

CHAPTER ll

METHODOLOGY
RESEACRH DESIGN

 This study was a quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive correlational

research.
 Researchers used survey questionnaire to determine the level of anxiety of the
students.
 According to Belli (2008), Quantitative data analysis is helpful in evaluation
because it provides quantifiable and easy to understand results.
 Correlational research simply defined as a relationship between two variables
(Kowalczyk, 2010). Rippy (2012) added that in correlation, shows relationships
between two variables showing a cause and effect relationship and show
predictions of a future event or outcome from a variable.
RESEARCH DESIGN

 Success or failure can be external or internal, stable or unstable, and controllable

or uncontrollable. Internal reasons are something that the students did while
external reasons are someone or something else that controls. Stable causes are
expected to occur again, and unstable causes are changeable. Vockell (n.d.)
pointed out that the arousal level of energy as students had experienced
determines the learners’ ability to do a certain work to achieve goals (Aloka,
Ndunge & Syokwaa, 2014).
RESEARCH LOCAL

 This study will take place within the school of Maryknoll School
of Sto.Tomas, Davao Del Norte, specifically at the senior high
school building. The survey will be managed in classrooms
throughout the school days.
SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

According to Dudovaskly (2012), convenience sampling or also known as availability sampling refers to a specific type of

non-probability sampling method that depends on data collection from population members who are conveniently

available to participate in a study. The respondents are limited for those students who experienced making research paper

and who are willing to be involved in this study. Researchers focused only the grade 12 students from different strands

which are the STEM, GAS, ABM, and TVL students. In addition, there are 233 respondents that were given with the

survey questionnaires made by the researchers for them to answer.

DATA COLLECTION

In the conduct of this study, all the respondents of the study were given consent forms so the researchers would know if

they agree to be part of the study and that the researchers would have the authority to make use of their grades in research.

The data were collected through the use of survey questionnaire. The researchers visited in each classroom during their

recess time or lunch break. During the visiting time, the researchers introduced the research topic and gave the students

consent forms. Then, the researchers administered the survey.

STATISTICAL TOOL

The researchers used the following statistical tools that analyzed the data that were gathered.

Weighted Mean. This was used to determine the anxiety level in research subject.

Mean. This was used in determining the academic achievement in research subject.

Person r. This was used to determine the significant relationship of anxiety and academic achievement of the students in

their research subject.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data were analyzed through testing the significance of relationship between the mean of the research grades of students

and their anxiety level. The result were showed in tabular method and were analyzed through the SPSS. The researchers

analyzed it through Pearson r analysis. According to University of West England (2017), Pearson r is used to the test the

relationship between two quantitative, continuous variables. It is also stated that the Pearson’s correlation coefficient or R-

values is the measure of strength of the association between two variables.
