Strategies to teach problem-
solving at home One should encounter a challenge, do a think-aloud for the benefit of his or her child . Also parents should
show their child willingness to make mistakes.
1. Ask for advice • As a parent , you should ask your kids for advice when you have a problem. This may teaches them that its common to make mistakes and face challenges. How ever this may also give them the opportunity to practice problem-solving skills. • Take their advice into consideration by indicating that their ideas are valued and this may lead them to have more confidence to attempt solving problems on their own. Do not provide the answer • In the any difficult as it may be, as a parent allow your child to struggle ,sometime fail and ultimately learn from experiencing consequences. Age specific strategies • From the age of 3-5 years , kids at this age first learn to manage their emotions and after that it can be difficult for them to consider the solution. So as a parent , teach your kids that all emotions are acceptable meaning there are no bad emotions. • Parents with the kids from the age of 5-7 should use any simple problem-solving process that can consistently implements. Teach kids to identify the problem she or he is facing. Kids should be able to ask themselves such as , “what am I feeling?” what’s the problem ? “what are the solution ?” Ask open-Ended question • This may help kids to improve a child’s ability to think critically and creatively , ultimately making them better problem-solvers. Try to ask them question that may required them to elaborate more on their problems .Example : how could we work together to solve this ? What did you learn from this or that mistake ? • Don’t ask them question that can make them feel down.
