The document provides requirements for designing a cantilever beam that can withstand a distributed load of 1 kN/m applied across its 3m length. The beam must have a minimum safety factor of 2.0, a square cross-section with dimensions in increments of 5, and a thickness of at least 1mm. An FEA analysis of the final design is required. The report will be graded based on meeting design limitations, providing calculations, drawings, FEA details, and comparing analytical and FEA results.

Design Of Cantilever beam Under Distributed Loading
Complex Engineering Problem (Project Assignment)
Report Submission Deadline: 26th December 2021
ME-314 (Mechanics of Solids 2) - Fall 2020
Problem Statement Design beam with one end fixed and to withstand the distributed loading of 1 kN/m. applied across the beam
• Design Limitations and requirements
– Length of the member is 3 m – Allowable thickness 1 mm or more, but thickness must not be in decimals. – Minimum factor of Safety 2.0 according to tresca criteria – Mean perimeter dimensions must be XX0 or XX5 i.e. (x,y,z) = (1,1,0) or (1,0,1) or (5,1,1) etc. – Cross-section of the beam must be square – Analysis of final design using any FEA package Important Note
• Grading Method (150 points)
• Zero points if any of given design limitations is violated • Zero points if FEA analysis is missing • Zero points will be awarded for copied project assignment – 50 points for maximum strength to weight ratio based on tresca criteria • Rest will follow = 50 - %difference Report requirement (100 Points) • Details of problem statement with design limitations, requirements with assumptions (5 points) • Complete analytical calculations (only manual calculations will be acceptable) with proper description (from initial design to final design with sketches) (30 points) – strength to weight ratio – Factor of safety based on required criterion • Proper drawing of final design with dimensions (ISO standard) on separate A4 sheet. (10 points) • Complete details of FEA analysis including (30 points): Model (2D or 3D), Boundary conditions with details, Meshing with details, Result plot (showing reactions, maximum stresses and angle of twist with details) and Complete description of every steps with clear pictures and description (white background) • Comparison with analysis on calculated results and FEA results (15 points) • Overall report quality, report structure and clarity (10 points)
