Linear Induction Motor

The document summarizes a linear induction motor (LIM). Key points: 1) A LIM produces linear motion rather than rotary motion like a conventional induction motor due to its open air gap design. 2) LIMs can be classified as short primary single sided, short secondary single sided, or double sided primary based on their construction. 3) LIMs experience end effects due to their open ended design which can impact efficiency. 4) LIMs have advantages over conventional motors like low cost and maintenance but also disadvantages like low power factor and efficiency. 5) Common applications of LIMs include traction motors, conveyor belts, sliding doors, and

LINEAR INDUCTION MOTOR

Difference between Rotating IM and LIM
• The fundamental difference between Conventional Induction
motor(producing rotary motion and a linear induction motor
producing linear motion)is the difference in their respective air
gap.
• The rotating induction motor has a closed air gap whereas the
linear induction motor has a open air gap.
• If an induction motor is cut and laid flat a linear induction motor is
obtained.
• The stator and rotor of the rotating motor corresponds to the
primary and secondary sides of the LIM respectively.
• The angular velocity becomes linear velocity and the torque
becomes thrust in Linear Induction Motor.
Construction
• Primary cut and unrolled
Construction of LIM
• The primary side consists of magnetic core
with a three phase winding.
• The secondary side may be just a metal sheet
or winding wound around a magnetic core.
Classification

• Short Primary Single sided

SLIM with fixed secondary
– This SLIM is used for longer
operating distance because it
would be too expensive to
design a full length primary
winding.
– Since the secondary is stationary
and fixed the induced secondary
currents produce flux that reacts
against the primary flux to
propel the primary along the
conductive strip.
– This design is typically used in
cranes
• Short secondary single
sided Linear induction
motor:
– This type of LIM is suited
for limited distances but
developes relatively high
thrust force.
• Double Sided primary
LIM(DSLIM)
– Coreless secondary.
– The double primary
construction provides a more
definite magnetic circuit
– It is the essentially the design
used in the railway car LIM.
– Secondary sheet may be
either magnetic or a non
magnetic material.

END EFFECTS
• This is due to the open ended construction.
• It can be classified as static and dynamic.
• Static is due the assymetric geometry of the primary resulting in assymetric flux
distribution and in turn resulting in unequal induced voltages.
• Dynamic is due to the relative motion of the primary side with respect to the
secondary side.
• As the primary moves over the secondary,at every instant a new secondary
conductor comes under the primary leading edge while another secondary
conductor is leaving the trailing edge.
• The conductor coming under the leading edge opposed the magnetic flux in the
airgap, while the conductor leaving the trailing edge doesn’t.Therefore flux
distribution is distorted.
• The conductor leaving the trailing edge still cariying the current does not
contribute to thrust. So the losses in the secondary reduces efficieny of motor
Advantages
• Low initial cost
• Low maintenance
• No overheating
• No limitation of maximum speed
• Power to weight ratio is better than the
conventional induction motor
• Tractive effort does not depend on the speed
Disadvantages
• Low power-factor
• Poor efficiency
• In a linear induction motor, the air gap is large
compared to the conventional induction motor.
Therefore, a large magnetizing current is produced.
• The cost of a rail fixed along the centerline of the
track is very high.
• It causes difficulties at crossings and hence other
provisions are needed for crossing.
Applications
• This type of motor is widely used as a traction
motor.
• Metallic belt conveyers
• Sliding door operations
• For transportation (medium and high-speed
vehicles)
• In railway yards for shunting
• Electromagnetic pumps
