 Region 3 is also known as the Central Luzon

 The region 3 is one of the leading growth
regions in the Philippines, strategically
located at the heart of Asia. Region 3 lies
between Manila and Northern Luzon.
It is the largest contiguous flat land area in
the Philippines.

Tomás Pinpin (1580-1648)

Born in Abucay, Bataan, Philippines

Was a printer, writer and publisher from


Abucay, a municipality in the province of
Bataan, Philippines, who was the first
Philippine printer and is sometimes referred as
the "Prince of the Filipino Printers."

 Simon Pinpin is remembered for being
the first Philippine personage to publish
and print a book, "Librong Pagaaralan
nang mga Tagalog nang Uicang Castilla"
(Reference Book for Learning Castellano
in Tagalog) in 1610, entirely written by
himself in the old Tagalog orthography.
Personal Life

Tomás Pinpin was born in Barrio Mabatang,
Abucay, Bataan, between 1580 and 1585. The
exact dates of birth and death as well as his
parentage are unknown because in 1646
Dutch looters raided his home town of
Abucay and burned the parish records.
However, his last name indicates that he
must have had Chinese ancestors.
Work as printer

In 1610 he printed the book "Arte y Reglas de
la Lengua Tagala", by his mentor Father
Francisco Blancas de San Jose, and in the
same year his famous "Librong Pagaaralan
nang manga Tagalog nang Uicang Castilla"
was printed by his assistant, Diego Talaghay.
The book contained 119 pages divided into
five parts and was meant to help Filipinos
learn the Spanish language.

Francisco Balagtas y de la
Cruz (1788-1862)

Born in Bigaa, Bulacan, Philippines

Commonly known as Francisco Balagtas,


Francisco Balagtas was a Filipino Tagalog
litterateur and poet during the Spanish Colonial
period of the Philippines. He is widely considered
one of the greatest Filipino literary laureates for
his impact on Filipino literature. The epic Florante
at Laura is regarded as his defining work.

Often portrayed as a story that talks about
how love conquers all, the poem revolves
around lovers separated by unfair situations.
However, “Florante and Laura” is more than
love story it is a masterpiece that talks about
injustice, bad governance and revolution.
Personal Life

Francisco Balagtas was born in Barrio
Panginay, Bigaa, Bulacan as the youngest of
the four children of Juan Balagtas, a
blacksmith, and Juana de la Cruz. He studied
in a parochial school in Bigaa and later in
Manila. During his childhood years.
Francisco later worked as a houseboy in
Tondo, Manila.
Life as a poet

Balagtas learned to write poetry from José de
la Cruz (Joseng Sisiw), one of the most
famous poets of Tondo, in return for chicks.
It was De la Cruz himself who personally
challenged Balagtas to improve his writing.
Balagtas swore he would overcome Huseng
Sisiw as he would not ask for anything in
return as a poet.
Life as a poet

In 1835, Balagtas moved to Pandacan,
Manila, where he met María Asunción
Rivera, who would effectively serve as
the muse for his future works. She is
referenced in Florante at Laura as
'Selya' and 'MAR'.
Legacy

Balagtas is greatly idolized in
the Philippines that the term for
Filipino debate in
extemporaneous verse is
named after him: Balagtasan.
Legacy

 His birthplace, Bigaa, Bulacan, was renamed
to Balagtas, Bulacan in his memory. A
museum, historical marker, monument and
elementary school has been placed in his
birthplace at Panginay, Balagtas, Bulacan. An
elementary school was erected in honor of
Balagtas, the Francisco Balagtas Elementary
School (FBES), located along Alvarez Street in
Santa Cruz, Manila.

The former Folk Arts Theater in Manila was
renamed to Tanghalang Francisco Balagtas to
honor Balagtas. Mercurian crater was also

Heber Bartolome (1948-
2021)

Born in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines

- Is a folksinger that sings socially critical songs


that ordinary folks and conscious listeners
“Tayo’y mga Pinoy” remains relevant, as it calls
for independence from empire. Heber’s songs
transcend time as it never focuses on personality
cult but on real or concrete issues of the day as
well as on progressive ideology.
Heber Bartolome

(November 4, 1948 – November 15, 2021) was a
Filipino folk and rock singer, songwriter,
composer, poet, guitarist, bandurria player,
bluesman, and painter. His music was
influenced by the "stylistic tradition" of
Philippine folk and religious melodies. He was
the founder of Banyuhay, a "protest band" that
carried the trademark sound of the kubing, a
native musical instrument in the Philippines.

in Nueva Ecija, Philippines to Deogracias
Bartolome and Angelina Gonzalez.
Deogracias Bartolome was a pastor and
violin and guitar maker, and a rondalla
band leader while Angelina Gonzalez
was a singer in the zarzuela.

Heber Bartolome was a member of the
ROTC Band and the University of the
Philippines Concert Chorus.
Bartolome started his professional
career in music in folk houses during
the late 1960s.

was a professor of Filipino
Literature at the De La Salle
University from 1981 to 1984.

As a musician, he held performances
throughout the Philippines. Abroad, he staged
concerts in Australia and Europe. In 1993, he
launched Mga Awit ni Heber ("Heber's Songs"),
a collection of Bartolome's greatest songs. Apart
from being a musician, Bartolome also
exhibited artworks and was an active lobbyist
for the rights of Filipino composers

Soto

Was a Filipino poet, dramatist,
journalist and newspaperman. He was
also known as Crissot, the “Father of
Pampango Literature”
Biography

Soto was born in Santa Inés, Bacolor,
Pampanga to Santiago Soto and Marciana
Caballa. His father was from a middle-class
family and owned rice fields while his
mother was a seamstress. He had two
younger siblings. His father worked as a
clerk in the town tribunal and eventually
became Bacolor’s alguacil mayor (head
peace officer).
Biography

After graduating, Soto enrolled in the Colegio
de San Juan de Letrán and studied philosophy,
Latin and theology. However, his passion for
poetry and theatrical plays prohibited him from
finishing with a degree. He went back to
Bacolor before the school year was over and
wrote a Pampango version of the Shakespeare
play, Romeo and Juliet. His version was
entitled “Ing Pamaquisawa ning Mete” (“The
Marriage of the Dead”).
Career

Soto’s first attempt in producing a play failed.
Yet, he did not go back to college as he fell in
love with the girl who played Juliet in his play.
His father did not approve of the relationship
and instead he was wed to Julia Almaida in
1891. His next works were all Pampango
adaptations from Spanish plays, namely: Ing
Marino, Ding Mipalsinta Teruel, Fausto and I
Neron Ampon Ding Gladiadores.

(1932-)

Born in Camiling, Tarlac, Philippines

- a Palanca Award Hall of Famer and a multi-


awarded fiction writer, is one of the
Philippines' most popular writers in English.
Known for his sophisticated and elegant style.
- His earlier collection of short stories earned
him the title of the "Catholic Writer”

Brillantes is a native of Camiling, Tarlac. He
obtained his Litt. B. degree in the Ateneo de
Manila University. He has edited Sunburst, The
Manila Review, Focus, Asia-Philippines Leader
and the Philippines Free Press. Among his
published collections of short stories are: The
Distance to Andromeda and Other Stories, The
Apollo Centennial, Help, and On a Clear Day in
November Shortly Before the Millennium, Stories
for a Quarter Century.
