Data Validation

Data validation in Excel allows you to define restrictions on the data entered into cells. It can be used to create a list of allowed values for a cell, set custom validation rules, display input prompts, and show error messages for invalid data. To add data validation to a cell or range, select the cells, go to the Data tab and click Data Validation. Options like list, data type, and input messages can be specified on the Settings tab. DATA VALIDATION

Data validation is an excel feature that we can use to define restrictions on what data can or
should be entered in a cell.
It allows you to do the following:
1. Make a list off the entries that restricts the values allowed in a cell and also can set custom
rule.
2. Create a prompt message explaining the kind of data allowed in a cell.
3. Create message that appear when incorrect data has been entered.
ADD DATA VALIDATION TO A CELL OR RANGE
OF CELL
STEPS
1. Select one or more cells to validate.
2. On the Data tab, in the Data tools group, click Data Validation.
3. On the settings tab, in the Allow box, select list.
4. Then choose the required option from DATA.

Tips for working with data validation
If you are planning to share the workbook, share it only after having
finished specifying data validation and protection setting.
To quickly remove data validation for a cell, select it and then open
Data validation dialog box(Data tab, Data tool groups).On the
settings tab, click clear All.
If Data validation isn’t working, make sure that you are not copying or
filling the data.
