VALUE FORMATION

HERE IS WHERE YOUR PRESENTATION BEGINS

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be expected to;

 Explain values in terms of their three domains

 Discuss the role of the intellect and will in value formation
• Classify values according to Scheler’s hierarchy
• Clarify whether one really values the things he says he values.
What value formation means?

Values formation is the confluence of our

personal experiences and particular culture.
Why is value formation
important?
● Our values inform our thoughts, words, and
actions.
● Our values are important because they help
us to grow and develop.
“Is there such things as RIGHT,
UNCHANGING and UNIVERSAL values?
Idealist point of
view
There are unchanging
and universal values.
●The value of love, care and concern for our fellowmen are
values for all people regardless of time and space.

These are called transcendent values.

Relativist point of
view
Claim that there are no
universal and unchanging
values. They assert that
values are dependent on
time and space.
“Are values TAUGHT or
CAUGHT”
Value is a Taught
Value is Caught
VALUES

• Cognitive
• Affective
• Behavioral aspects
3 dimensions of value

• Cognitive dimension
Mental understanding and readiness

• Affective dimension
Experience toward something

• Behavioral dimension
Living by the value
Value formation is training of the
intellect and will

• Your intellect discerns a value and

presents it to the will as a right and
wrong value.

• Your will wills to act on the right value

and wills to avoid the wrong value
presented by your intellect.
As described by St. Thomas Aquinas

“The intellect proposes and will

disposes”
It is, therefore, necessary that you develop your
intellect in its 3 functions namely

• Formation of Ideas
• Judgement
• Reasoning
Virtuous versus Vicious life and their affect on the will

In short, a virtuous life strengthens you

to live by right values and live of
abundance and joy while a vicious life
leads you to perdition and misery.
