Lesson 1: Drawing Conclusion About Population Mean Based
on Test Statistic Value and Critical Region
The final step in testing hypothesis is to interpret the results or draw conclusions out
of the computed value. In this module, you will decide whether you reject or not the
null hypothesis.
Let us first recall the different terms related to hypothesis testing by answering the
following activity.

Decision: The absolute value of the computed t-value is greater than the
absolute of the critical t-value at 𝛼 = 0.025 (i.e. |3.671|> |2.485|). Therefore,
we reject the null hypothesis.

Critical Region: Look at the table on page 7
Test Statistics: z-test
Decision: The absolute value of the computed z-value is greater than the
absolute of the critical t-value at 𝛼 = 0.05 (i.e. |3.747|> |1.960|).
Therefore, we reject the null hypothesis.
Critical Region: Look at the table on page 7
Test Statistics: z-test
Decision: The absolute value of the computed z-value is less than the
absolute of the critical t-value at 𝛼 = 0.01 (i.e. |1.818| |2.326|).
Therefore, we fail reject the null hypothesis.
Critical Region: Look at the table on page 7
Test Statistics: t-test
Decision: The absolute value of the computed t-value is greater than the
absolute of the critical t-value at 𝛼 = 0.05 (i.e. |2.463| |1.645|).
Therefore, we reject the null hypothesis.
Critical Region: Look at the table on page 7

Decision: The absolute value of the computed z-value is less than the
absolute of the critical t-value at 𝛼 = 0.01 (i.e. |1.643| |2.326|).
Therefore, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.

Decision: The absolute value of the computed t-value is less than the
absolute of the critical t-value at 𝛼 = 0.01 (i.e. |1.536| |1.960|).
Therefore, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
