RESEARCH

TITLE
WHAT IS RESEARCH TITLE?
 The title summarizes the main idea or
ideas of your study. A good title
contains the fewest possible words that
adequately describe the contents and/or
purpose of your research paper. The title
is without doubt the part of a paper that is
read the most, and it is usually read first.
YOUR TITLE SHOULD BE
  descriptive
 direct
 accurate
 appropriate
 interesting
 concise
 precise
 unique
 should not be misleading.
WHY RESEARCH TITLE IS IMPORTANT?
 The title of your manuscript is usually the first introduction
readers have to your published work. Therefore, you must
select a title that grabs attention, accurately describes the
contents of your manuscript, and makes people want to read
further.
 The title is the first, and sometimes only, part of your article that
potential readers will see, so it’s important to grab their attention
and entice them to read your article. It’s also important to accurately
portray your work so readers aren’t misled by a catchy but not-
quite-accurate title.
 Readers scan the title to decide whether to read your article, cite it
in their own work, or include it in a literature review, all of which
you want to happen
RESEARCH TITLE HAVE MULTIPLE PURPOSE?
 The initial aim of a title is to capture the reader's attention and
to highlight the research problem under investigation.
Typically, the final title you submit to your professor is created after
the research is complete so that the title accurately captures what
has been done.
 The title of a book, or any other published text or work of art, is a
name for the work which is usually chosen by the author. A title can
be used to identify the work, to place it in context, to convey a
minimal summary of its contents, and to pique the reader's
curiosity.
 Three of the most influential and common purposes of research
are exploration, description and explanation.
The purpose of a title is to:

 Grab Attention – Compel the reader to read

the lead-in. Predict Content – Set an
expectation of what awaits them. Establish
Tone – Create an atmosphere appropriate to
the subject matter.
IDEAL LENGTH OF A RESEARCH TITLE
 a good title for a research paper is
typically around 10 to 12
words long. A lengthy title may seem
unfocused and take the readers'
attention away from an important
point

Basic Guidelines in Make Research Title

 A research study title is the very first thing a reader

comes across when searching for scientific literature. It
is a concise description of the content of the research
study containing the fewest possible words, yet
adequate to describe the contents of the paper for a
simple reason that we do not want to mislead the
readers. After conceptualizing a most probable
research topic, drafting the title early in the research
process helps in keeping your focus on the subject. The
following are the basic guidelines in making a research
study title:
1. Use an accurate description of the subject and scope of the study instead of using general
terms.
2. Do not use abbreviations except for commonly known ones like DNA and ICT.
3. Do not include words like “The study of,” “analysis of,” “an investigation of” or similar
construction as these would only lengthen the title.
4. Include the main dependent and independent variables.
5. Be mindful of the proper use of grammar and punctuation.
6. Capitalize all nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs as well as the first
letter of the first and last words.
7. State in a declarative form, although you may also see titles in question form from
time to time.
8. The year the study has been conducted should not be indicated unless it is a
historical study.
9. Use current terminology.
10. Depending on the institutional requirements, 5 to15 words are sufficient to
describe the research study.
11. Use the common name instead of chemical formula (e.g., NH4)
12. Write and italicize the full scientific names.
13. Must reflect the tone of the paper. An academic research paper has title which is
not casual, or informal, or does not contain humour.
How do you know if a research title is qualitative or quantitative?

 Quantitative research deals with numbers

and statistics, while qualitative research
deals with words and meanings. Quantitative
methods allow you to systematically measure
variables and test hypotheses. Qualitative
methods allow you to explore concepts and
experiences in more detail
