C = Commission
S = Amount of sales (in peso or number of items)
R = Rate of Commission (in percent or in peso)

are given.

S = 800
R = ₱48.00

Step 3: Write the working equation.

C = (S)(R)

Step 5: Find the answer.

C = ₱38,400.00

The seller’s commission is ₱38,400.00.

14
Commission on Cash Basis

Graduated Commission
● the earned commission increases as the target amount of
sales increases
● calculated by getting the sum of the product of every
target amount of sales and the rate of commission for
each target

15
Commission on Cash Basis

Graduated Commission

C = (S1)(R1) + (S2)(R2) + … (Sn)(Rn)

C = Commission
S1, S2,...Sn= Amount of sales (in peso or number of items)
R1, R2,...Rn = Rate of Commission (in percent or in peso)

A seller will earn 5% for the first ₱40,000.00 and a 10%

commission for the sales above ₱40,000.00. Compute the total
commission if the total sales amounted to ₱85,000.00.
Solution:
Step 1: Identify what is required in the problem.
You are asked to calculate the commission (C).

Step 2: Identify the given in the problem.

The target amounts of sales (S1 and S2), rates of
commission (R1 and R2) for each target and the amount
of sales (S) are given.

18
Calculating a Graduated Commission

Closer L

S1 = ₱40,000.00
S2 = Please note the phrase “sales above ₱40,000.00.”
Therefore, S2 = S - 40,000 = 85,000 - 40,000 = ₱45,000.00
R1 = 5% = 0.05
R2 = 10% = 0.10
S = ₱85,000.00

19
Calculating a Graduated Commission

Closer L

Step 3: Write the working equation.

C = (S1)(R1) + (S2)(R2)

Step 4: Substitute the given values.

C = (S1)(R1) + (S2)(R2)
C = (40,000)(0.05) + (45,000)(0.10) = ₱6,500.00

20
Calculating a Graduated Commission

Step 5: Find the answer.

C = ₱6,500.00

The total amount of commission is ₱6,500.00.

The amounts of sales (S1 and S2) and rates of
commission (R1 and R2) are given.

S1 = ₱60,500.00
S2 = ₱125,500.00
R1 = 26% = 0.26
R2 = 6% = 0.06
25

Step 3: Write the working equation.

C = C1 + C2
C1 = (S1)(R1)
C2 = (S2)(R2)

Step 4: Substitute the given values.

C1 = (S1)(R1) = (60,500)(0.26) = ₱15,730.00
C2 = (S2)(R2) = (125,500)(0.06) = ₱7,530.00
C = C1 + C2 = 15,730 + 7,530 = ₱23,260.00
