STATISTICS06

This document discusses various probability sampling techniques including simple random sampling, systematic sampling, stratified sampling, cluster sampling, and multistage sampling. It also discusses non-probability sampling techniques including quota sampling, convenience sampling, and judgmental sampling. It then discusses sampling errors, non-sampling errors, and the central limit theorem.

Sampling Errors
• Different samples selected from the same population will give different
results as the elements included in the samples are different

• When there is a difference between the sample mean and the

population mean then that difference is known as the sample Error.

• Non sampling Error : when the census method is used then also there
are chances of errors right from the planning stage to the execution
stage . Wrong method of collection of data , non response of the
respondents, poor supervision of staff etc.
Central limit theorem
• A central limit theorem states that as sample size gets larger enough ,
sampling distribution of mean can be approximated by the normal
distribution :
• Formula :

• When a sample comprises of 30 or more elements it is considered as

large enough for the application of central limit theorem.
For a given data S.D. = 300 and n = 25 Find standard error of sample mean:
Also find the standard error if the sample size increases by 400%
A random sample of n = 25 was selected from a normally distributed population. The population
mean is 106 and standard deviation is 12.
a) Find the sample error of the sampling distribution
b) what is the probability that the sample mean is greater than 100 .
C) what is the probability that the sample mean will be within +/- 4 from population mean.
The standard deviation of a certain population is about 5 units. How large a simple random
sample should be if the standard error of the sample mean is to be 1? How large it should be for
the standard error of 0.1 ?
A random sample of size 9 is taken from a normal population with population mean
is 25 . If sample variance is 100 , find the probability that the sample mean exceeds
31.2
Certain tubes , manufactured by a company , have mean lifetime of 800 hours and standard
deviation of 60 hours . Find the probability that a random sample of 16 tubes taken from the
group will have mean life time of (a) between 790 and 810 hours, (b) less than 785 hours , (c)
more than 820 hours , (d) between 770 and 830 hours .
Baye’s theorem ( Derivation)
What is the probability that a person has fever with headache ? If 80 % of times
fever causes headache and probability of fever is 1/20,000 and probability of
headache is 20%.
In a manufacturing factory, machines A , B and C produce 25% , 35% and 40 % bolts respectively.
Out of the total 5% , 4% and 2 % are the defective bolts . A bolt is drawn at a random and if the
bolt drawn is defective , what is the probability it is manufactured by machine B.
An insurance company insured 2000 scooter drivers, 4000 car drivers and 6000 truck drivers . Probability of an accident involving
scooter car and truck is 0.01,0.03 and 0.15. One of the insured drivers meets with an accident . What is the probability that the
person was a scooter driver.
