LESSON 3 Converting Percent To Fraction and Deciomal Forms

This document provides examples for converting percentages to decimal and fraction forms. To convert a percentage to decimal form, divide the percent value by 100. To convert a percentage to a fraction, write the percent as a fraction with a denominator of 100 and simplify. If the percent has digits after the decimal point, multiply the fraction by 10 to the power of the number of digits after the decimal before simplifying.

Lesson 3:

Converting Percent to
Fraction and Decimal Forms
CONVERTING PERCENTAGE TO
DECIMAL
5. TO CONVERT OR EXPRESS
PERCENT TO DECIMAL FORM, you
simply divide the percent value by
100.
Example 1: Convert 20% to decimal form.
Divide the percent value by 100.
20 ÷ 100 = 0.2

Therefore, 20% is equivalent to 0.2.

Example 2: Convert 1.125% to decimal form.
Divide the percent value by 100.
1.125 ÷ 100 = 0.01125

Therefore, 1.125% is equivalent to 0.01125.

Example 3: Convert 0.0035% to decimal form.

Divide the percent value by 100.

0.0035 ÷ 100 = 0.000035

Therefore, 0.0035% is equivalent to 0.000035.

CONVERTING PERCENTAGE TO
FRACTION
6. TO CONVERT OR EXPRESS
PERCENT TO FRACTION FORM, if the
percent value is a whole number,
you write the percent value as a
fraction with a denominator of 100
and then you need to simplify the
resulting fraction.
Example 1: Convert 15% to fraction form.

Step 1: Write the percent value as a

fraction with a denominator of 100.
15/100
Step 2: Simplify the resulting
fraction. In 15/100 , both numerator
and denominator are divisibly by 5.
15/100 ÷ 5/5 = 3/20

Therefore, 15% is equivalent to 3/20 .

Example 2: Convert 80% to fraction form.

Step 1: Write the percent value as a

fraction with a denominator of 100.
80/100
Step 2:
Simplify the resulting fraction. In 80/100 ,
both numerator and denominator are
divisibly by 20.
80/100 ÷ 20/20 = 4/5

Therefore, 80% is equivalent to 4/5 .

Example 3: Convert 27% to fraction form.
Step 1: Write the percent value as a
fraction with a denominator of 100.

27/100
TO CONVERT OR EXPRESS PERCENT TO
FRACTION FORM, if the percent value is NOT
a whole number, you write the percent value
as a fraction with a denominator of 100 and
then you need multiply the resulting fraction
by 10^n, where n is the number of digits
after the decimal point. Afterwards, simplify
the product.
Example 1: Covert 27.8% to fraction form.
Step 1: Write the percent value as a fraction
with a denominator of 100.

27.8/100
Step 2: Multiply the resulting fraction
(numerator and denominator) by 10^n, where
n is the number of digits after the decimal
point. n = 1 because in 27.8 there is only 1 digit
after the decimal point.

27.8 100 x 101 = 278/1000

Step 3: Simplify the product.
In 278/1000 , both numerator and
denominator are divisibly by 2
278 1000 ÷ 2 2 = 139/500

Therefore, 27.8% is equivalent to

139/500 .
Example 2: Covert 8.25% to fraction form.

Step 1: Write the percent value as a

fraction with a denominator of 100.
8.25/100
Step 2: Multiply the resulting fraction
(numerator and denominator) by 10^n,
where n is the number of digits after the
decimal point. n = 2 because in 8.25 there
are 2 digits after the decimal point.

8.25/100 x 10^2 = 825/10000

Step 3: Simplify the product.

In 825/10000 , both numerator and

denominator are divisibly by 25.
825/10000 ÷ 25/25 = 33/400

Therefore, 8.25% is equivalent to 33/400 .

Example 3: Covert 0.035% to fraction
form.

Step 1: Write the percent value as a

fraction with a denominator of 100.
0.035/100
Step 2: Multiply the resulting fraction
(numerator and denominator) by 10^n,
where n is the number of digits after the
decimal point. n = 3 because in 0.035
there are 3 digits after the decimal point.

0.035 100 x 103 = 35/100000

Step 3: Simplify the product.

In 35/100000 , both numerator and

denominator are divisibly by 5.
35/100000 ÷ 5/5 = 7/20000

Therefore, 0.035% is equivalent to 7/20000 .

Formative Test:
