LSS - Group 3

This document analyzes the pitching performance of a baseball pitcher named Talion by examining data from his last 25 pitches in a game. It is determined that Talion's accuracy and precision have faded based on a scatter diagram. His performance is monitored and key data is collected, including that the pitches are normally distributed with a mean of 15 and standard deviation of 13.67. Process capability analysis reveals that Talion's Cp and Cpk values are less than the thresholds, indicating his pitching is not consistent and deviations are too large, showing he is not a capable starting pitcher based on this outing.

Pitch Perfect

Learning the ins and outs of capability analysis by examining a

baseball pitcher’s performance

Group - 3
Introduction
• Organizations should keep tabs on how well
they deliver on customer expectations.
• Organization should remain vigilant to
recognize the problem.
• Manager should respond with corrective
actions.
• Can be accomplished by calculating Process
capability.
Data Sample
• After showing the scatter diagram, it was clear
Talion's accuracy and precision were fading.
• Manager and peaching coach monitored his
performance.
• They observed last 25 pitches of total 77 pitches
Talion's threw.
• Sample size = 25

• Normally Distributed
⚬ P value= 0.991 > 0.05
⚬ mean = 15
⚬ SD =13.67
⚬ Range = 61.4
• 95% probability the true mean will fall between 9.4
and 20.7
• Data are distributed normally about the mean,
therefore normal capability analysis is choosen.
Process Moving
Chart

UCL : 15 + (2.66 x 18) = 62.9

LCL : 15 - (2.66 x 18) = -32.8

Where,
Process SD = 2.66
Average Moving Range = 18
Control Chart Equations & Constants
• 2.66 factor derives from a statistical estimate
of the short-term common cause variation,
often regarded as the process SD.
• Because the MR chart is capturing the
differences between successive individuals
chart data points, it calculates the three SD
widths by multiplying three times the average
MR divided by 1.1278, the control chart
constant for a sample size of two.
Strating Pitcher's capacility
• The Cp value calculate is less compared to the threshold, which tells that pitcher is not capable
• The Cpk tells us the consisitency and deviation between the target and the pitches, which is again
less to 1.33 value, which is considered the threshold.
Pitcher's Capability

• From histogram it can be

seen that process outcome
is beyond the desired
boundaries.
• Cp value < 1, process is
not capable.

Conclusion
By simply reviewing all the diagrams, it’s obvious that the process

outcomes (pitches) are completely beyond the desired boundaries

established by the specifications, and the central tendency of the

distributed data is off-target.
