Computer Aided Design

This document discusses computer aided design (CAD) software used in fashion design. It introduces several CAD programs including AutoCAD, CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. It then focuses on AutoCAD, describing its common uses in industry, interfaces, tools like lines, polygons, and text, and commands such as array, rotate, mirror, and hatch. Blocks and different types of repeats used in pattern design are also covered, along with the differences between symmetric and asymmetric design.

APPLICATIONS OF SOFTWARE - AUTOCAD
AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software application.

1. AutoCAD is used in industry, by architects, project managers, engineers, graphic designers, city planners and other
professionals.

2. This software used for designing and drafting.

3. It allows a user to conceptualize ideas, product designs and drawings to the required level of technical accuracy,
perform rapid design calculations and simulations in the field of manufacturing industries.
INTERFACE OF AUTOCAD (VERSION 2007)
KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE OF TOOLS

Line -
Lines draws a simple line, either a single line or a series of line segments starting from one point to another point
or end to end to draw a line.
Command - line, L”

Polyline -
Polyline creates line having properties such as thickness and curvature unlike standards.
Polyline can be grouped together to act as a simple object.
Command - Polyline

Point -
Point creates a point object.
Command - PO
Polygon -
Polygon allows you to draw a regular polygon up to 1024 slides. To define the polygon you can specify the
outside of inside radius or the length of one side.
Command - POL

Rectangle -
A plane figure with four straight sides and four right angles, especially one with unequal adjacent sides, in
contrast to a square
Command – REC

Circle -
A round plane figure whose boundary (the circumference) consists of points equidistant from a fixed point (the
center)
Command - C
Arc -
The arc is defined as the smooth curve formed by joining two or more points. The arc of a circle is defined as
the portion of the circumference of a circle. The arc can be drawn by specifying the starting point, center, and
the endpoint.
Command - ARC

Eraser -
Erase tool is used to erase objects in the drawing area.
Command - E
Scale -
Enlarges or reduces selected objects, keeping the proportions of the object the same after scaling. To scale an
object, specify a base point and a scale factor.
Command - SCALE

Trim -
The Trim command in AutoCAD is used to remove the objects, which meet the edges of other objects. It is
used to remove extra lines or extra parts of an object. Or Command used to trim one line back from another
line, one horizontal and one.

Array -
The array is the command used to draw multiple copies of an object in a particular pattern or order. We can also
manage the distance between the objects in the array.
Command - AR
Rotate –
Rotate tool is used to rotate any objects around the point you pick.
Command - RO
• The rotate command is used to rotate the object by an absolute angle.
• It turns objects through the specified point.
• The specified point is the base point, and the rotation is performed from that point.
• The rotation of objects can be performed by randomly dragging the cursor and also by the specified angle.

Mirror-
The mirror command in AutoCAD is used to create a copy (mirror copy) of the selected object
Offset -
The offset command in AutoCAD is used to create parallel lines, concentric circles, and parallel curves. We can offset
any object through a point or at a specified distance. We can create as many parallel lines and curves with the help of
the offset command.

D text/Text -
Text to create one or more lines of text, where each text line is an independent object that you can move, format, or
otherwise modify.
Measure –
• Measure creates a vertical and horizontal ray from the location of the pointing device, and displays the distance and
angles between any objects the vertical and horizontal rays intersect.
• Can also measure the distance or area of a sequence of points by selecting Distance or Area.

Lengthen-
Changes the length of objects and the included angle of arcs.
Can specify changes as a percentage, an increment, or as a final length or angle.
lengthen is an alternative to using trim or extend.

Hatch-
The Hatch command in AutoCAD is used to fill patterns inside an enclosed area. The patterns are hatched, gradient, and
solid fill.
Extend-
Extends objects to meet the edges of other objects. Extend can includes arcs, elliptical arcs, lines, open polylines.

Donut-
A donut consists of two arc polylines that are joined end-to-end to create a circular shape.

Copy-
The command copies a single object or a set of objects.

Chamfer-
it joins two nonparallel lines with an intermediate lines. Or adds intermediate lines between the line segments of a 2d
polyline, ray, x-line, lines and polylines.
Color-
The command color used to fill the object with the desired color.

Block-
Block is a set of drawing objects together to act as a single object. Can then insert, copy, mirror, move, rotate,
scale, or save the block as an extent file.
Block Repeat

(other names are Basic repeat, Full drop repeat, Square

Repeat, Straight-across repeat, straight repeat, one way repeat)

In this type of repeat, the motifs are placed directly on a

horizontal line to the left or right of the original motif.
Half Drop Repeat

A half drop repeat is often desired to break up the uniform look

that a full drop repeat can often give.

To create a half drop repeat, you step your motif horizontally

and then align the top of the second motif to the center of the
first motif.

Once this is done, you then duplicate both motifs at the same
time along the same horizontal and vertical lines.
¼ Repeat

Half Drop Repeat 1/3 Repeat

Mirror Print

A mirrored repeat duplicates a figure in a row, and then in the

next row, flips all the figures horizontally so they run in the
opposite direction.
All Over Print

An all over print is a print composed of a design that is repeated

across the entire surface of a garment.
Cross Repeat Brick Repeat Abstract Repeat
A graphic design is symmetrical when two or more of its
elements are identical and happen to mirror each other from a
central point. And also brings balance and order to design
In contrast to symmetrical design, a graphic design is
asymmetrical when there’s no particular balance from any side
of its central point or axis. Though imbalanced, asymmetry
brings a more authentic and natural quality to design.
