DIVERSITY EQUALITY

 Equality refers to providing equal opportunities to everyone and protecting people from being
discriminated.
 Diversity refers to recognizing and respecting and valuing differences in people.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

 Is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.
 Everyone’s human rights are respected and protected.
 Social workers aim to open the doors of access and opportunity for everyone, particularly those in
greatest need.
4 TYPES OF DIVERSITY

1. Internal Diversity – characteristics are ones related to situations that a person is born into. They are
things that a person didn’t choose for themselves and are impossible for anyone to change.

Examples of internal diversity:

 Race
 Physical ability
 Age
 Mental ability
 Ethnicity
 Cultural identity
 Gender identity

2. External Diversity – is used to describe things that are related to a person but aren’t characteristics that a
person was born with.
3. Organizational Diversity – also called functional diversity, relates to the differences between people that
are assigned to them by an organization.

Examples of organizational diversity:

 Job function
 Place of work
 Seniority
 Employment status

4. Worldview Diversity – is a diversity type that changes with time – we conceptualize the world differently
as we have new experiences and learn more about ourselves and each other.

Examples of worldview diversity:

 Political beliefs
 Moral compass
 Outlook on life
THE PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

 Participation
 Equity

EXAMPLES OF SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES

MULTICULTURISM INTO THE
CURRICULUM
MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION
 Is designed to prepare students for citizenship in a democratic society by teaching them to consider the
needs of individuals.
 It clarifies how issues of race, ethnicity, culture, language, religion, gender and abilities/disabilities are
intertwined with educational processes and content.

Why do we need a multicultural curriculum?

 To prepare students for diverse workplaces and multicultural environments.

 To exposed biases, stereotypes, and policies that can restrict achievement.
 To ensure the content is fair, accurate, and inclusive
 To accommodate for diverse teaching and learning styles of teachers and students.
 To help students, faculty and staff become advocates for multicultural awareness.
