Video Lesson CSS10ccables

This document provides information about computer networking cables. It defines different types of wired cables used for networking like unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable, shielded twisted pair (STP) cable, coaxial cable, and fiber optic cable. It also discusses wireless connections. The document outlines activities for identifying cable types, learning how to create straight-through and crossover Ethernet cables including required materials and steps, and identifying what cable is needed to connect different devices.

CREATING
NETWORK
CABLES
Objectives:

1. Identify different types of cables used in

networking.

2. Identify network cable used in connecting

devices.
3. List down the materials needed and the steps in
creating an Ethernet cable.
Cable is the medium through
which information usually moves
from one network device to
another.
Network Media
The network can be connected through two types of
connections:
Wired Wireless
- more reliable than a - widely used by some devices
wireless connection such as cellphones and
laptops for their portability
Different wired connections commonly used in
networking:
1. Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
Cable - a popular type of cable
- used for Local Area Networks.
- it has a two shielded wires twisted around each
other.
2. Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) Cable

The extra covering of the STP Cable provides extra

protection to prevent electromagnetic interference.
3. Coaxial Cable

- commonly used in television industries

- The metal shield surrounding the cable helps block

interference from fluorescence lights, motors, and
other computers.
4. Fiber Optic Cable
- Transmits light rather than electronic signals which
reduce the risks of electrical interference.

- It is ideal for environments where electrical

interference is present.
Wireless Connections

Wireless connections make use of LANs which

allow high frequency radio signals to communicate
between work stations, servers, or hubs.
Wireless Networks

- any type of computer network that use

wireless data connections for connecting
network nodes.
Types of Wireless Networks:
1. Wireless PAN (Wireless Personal Area Network)
Ex. Bluetooth and Infrared

2. Wireless LAN (WLANs)

Ex. Wi-Fi
3. Wireless Mesh Networks
Ex. Wireless MAN, Wireless WAN,
Global Area Network and Space Network
Cable Installation
RJ45 (Registered Jack)

- used for Ethernet networking and used for cables

Materials Needed: Steps in creating an Ethernet Cable:
RJ45/Registered Jack 1. Prepare all the materials needed
CAT5 UTP Cables 2. Pull out one meter of Cat5 UTP Cable
3. Using the cable stripper, peel the jacket of the UTP cable.
Crimping Tools
The peeled part of the cable should approximately be 1 inch
Wire Stripper 4. Arrange the wires in the proper color-coding sequence
Side Cutting Pliers 5. Refer to the color-coding table for either straight-through or
LAN Testers crossover
6. Trim the end of the wires to make sure the ends are equal
7. Carefully insert the wires into the RJ45
8. Lock it in using the crimping tool
9. Do this for both ends of the straight-through and cross over cables.
10. Test the connectivity of the cables using a LAN tester.
Evaluation
Directions: Identify whether the cable needed in
connecting the following devices is Straight-Through cable
or Crossover cable. Write ST for straight – through and CO
for crossover. Write your answer on a separate sheet of
paper.
CO

1. PC – PC ST
