This study examined how bicultural identity integration affects feelings of authenticity for bicultural individuals. The researchers hypothesized that those with low bicultural identity integration, having divided cultural identities, would feel inauthentic when conforming to a single culture, whereas those with high integration, having compatible identities, would feel authentic. Across four studies, the findings supported this, demonstrating that cultural conformity hinders felt authenticity for those with low integration but facilitates it for those with high integration. The study provided implications for understanding bicultural experiences and suggested areas for further research.

Title “Feeling at Home in Two Cultural Worlds:

Bicultural Identity Integration Moderates Felt
Authenticity”
Purpose of the research, why it is
so important and significant
Globalization increases people’s exposure and interaction
with different cultures. Working, studying, or traveling
abroad is a growing trend.
Even within the local mainstream culture, people can
experience a different culture when they shop, eat, or
work in areas populated with cultural minorities because
of this and other related Couse this article is so significant.
In this article bicultural individuals navigate and identify
with two cultures. Bicultural differ in levels of Bicultural
Identity Integration (BII)—how much their two cultural
identities are combined and compatible (high BII) versus
divided and conflicting (low BII).
The objectives of the article are
the following
The author hypothesized that during conformity in
cultural group contexts, bicultural with low BII feel
inauthentic (being untrue to themselves), whereas
bicultural with high BII feel authentic (being true to
themselves).
Low BII is associated with a less open and more neurotic
personality. At a socio-contextual level, immigrants
bicultural with low versus high BII face greater
discrimination, linguistic barriers and lower social
integration (e.g., less diverse social networks).
Are the research objective
are sounding?
The author tried to describe four hypotheses regarding
how high and low bicultural Asian Americans were felt in
authenticity with other language.
In my view the objective or the hypotheses that the
author drew was sound good and it can be also
measurable.
Literature evaluation

The related literature part that described in this article were

so recent and related with the general objectives and
hypotheses of the study.
Bicultural Individuals and Cultural Conformity, Cultural
Conformity and Identity Threat, Identity Threat and Felt
Authenticity, Self-Kindness Counteracts State Inauthenticity
and other that related with the title and objective of this study
were raised well organized literature and related study were
presented so it’s a good literature.
Were the citations
appropriate?
Most of the citation were appropriate and followed the
instruction of APA style. And they did well in where and how
the authors the publication years and others.
Method and design

How was the research conducted?

Experimental research design was employed. But there were
not mentioned which type of experimental research design
that the present study used. So it should be mentioned
Does the design much with the proposed objectives?
Yes; as I mentioned in the objective of the study there were
four different studies are conducted depending on how the
hypotheses. Therefore for every study and hypotheses there
were different sample size and methods of data analysis
regarding to this which is not commonly used.
Analysis

 In the first study analysis on online survey one hundred and

thirty adults of United States participated and randomly
assigned regarding to their original cultures. Analyses are
made by central tendency (mean), and measure of despair like
standard deviation and moderation analysis for this study
type.
 The second study use 210 Asian-Americans participant in the
United States recruited from MTurk.com that helps to online
survey. The study criteria were identical to Study 1.They also
use pulmonary analysis for this purpose.

 The third study use two hundred and thirty-nine Asian-Americans
participated via MTurk. The eligibility criteria and payment were
identical to Study 1. they calculated target sample size using an
estimated effect size of f2=0.15, which would require 130 participants
to be powered at 90%. Six participants did not follow the instructions
(four did not complete the cultural priming task properly; two did not
complete the self-kindness priming task properly).
• And the fourth study Participants were 202 Asian-Americans in the
United States who participated via Mturk. The eligibility criteria and
payment were the same as in Study 1. We calculated our target
sample size using an estimated effect size of f2=0.15, which would
require 130 participants to be powered at 90%. Nine participants did
not complete the behavioral description task and/or self-kindness
priming task properly and were excluded from the analysis.
Were the result properly
interpreted?
Yes all the result were interpreted accordingly with how
hypotheses are tested such as the use inferential statistics to
test their hypothesis and if it was significant they accept the
null hypotheses and if not the reject it. Unless the whole
statistical process and or its sophistication so specific this
study has a good analyses and interpretations.
Results

What was the finding of the study?

 The general finding of this study show that for bicultural
individuals—people who identify strongly with two cultures,
conforming in cultural contexts can hinder or facilitate felt
authenticity. This depends on their level of Bicultural Identity
Integration (BII). Bicultural with low BII (unintegrated cultural
identities) feel inauthentic conforming in cultural identity
settings, whereas bicultural with high BII (integrated cultural
identities) feel authentic doing so.
Cont..
Were the findings much with the study objectives?
 Yes it is because of a good analysis they made and
interpretation the result were related with the study finding
and what the hypotheses said.
Were there any study limitation?
 Yes. Such as Using one’s second language in social situations
(e.g., speakingbroken English) may elicit feelings of discomfort
and inauthenticity and lead individuals to shy away or
withdraw.
Subject matter significance
Were the recommendation posit sounding
 There is no recommendations are mentioned in this article but
in other means the researcher tries to mentioned different
recommendation such as further study, psychological
intervention and so on
What were the implications of the study?
 This article could be a good example and replicable to the
country like Ethiopia so diversified country. This article
conveys a message and implacable to use bicultural indent
integration to peoples to confirm and respect each other’s
culture.
Is the reference writing sounding and appropriate?
 Yes it is they used APA format of writing reference.
