Basic Concepts

A function is a special type of relation where each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range. The domain is also called the first component of the ordered pairs, while the range is called the second component. Functions can be represented as mappings from the domain to the range or as sets of ordered pairs that satisfy the vertical line test. Basic types of functions include constant, linear, quadratic, rational, power, absolute value, polynomial, and greatest integer functions.

Basic
Concepts
RELATION
 It is a set of ordered pairs.

If x and y are elements of these sets

and if a relation exist between x and y,
then we say that x corresponds to y. we
may represent it as the ordered pair of
(x,y).
FUNCTION
 It is special kind of relation.

 A function is a relation in which , for

each value of the first component of the
ordered pairs, there is exactly one value
of the second component.

RANGE
A Function can be expressed in different
ways:
 MAPPING

 VERTICAL LINE TEST
If a vertical line cuts the graph of a relation in more than
one point, then the graph relation does not represent a
function.

BASIC TYPES OF
FUNCTION
 CONSTANT FUNCTION- a function of
zero degree that are in the form f(x)=c.

Example:
1. f(x)=1
2. f(x)=
3. f(x)=5
 LINEAR FUNCTION- is a function of
first-degree polynomial that are in the
form of f(x)=

Example:
1. y = 2x + 1
2. 5x = 6 + 3y
3. y = 3 − x
 QUADRATIC FUNCTION- is a function
of the form f(x)=

Example:
1. f(x)= +1
2. f(x)= 12 - 8x  +x2
3. f(x)= -4 + 5x  -x2
 RATIONAL FUNCTION- is the quotient
of two polynomial functions that are of
the form f(x)=

Example:
1. f(x)=
2. f(x)=
 POWER FUNCTION- is a function of the
form f(x)=,where n is any real number.

Example:
1. f(x)=
2.
 ABSOLUTE VALUE FUNCTION- is a
function of the form f(x) = |x|.

Example:
1. f(x) = |x+1|
2. f(x) = |-2|
3. f(x) = ||
 POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION- is any
function that the exponent start with 3 or
above.

Example:
1. f(x)=
2. f(x)=
 GREATEST INTEGER FUNCTION- is a
function of the form f(x)= [x]

Example:
1. f(x)=[6.2]
2. f(x)=[2x]
