Dairy waste, or manure, is commonly managed through three systems in the US: solid, slurry, and lagoon. The solid system handles manure that is 75-80% moisture through scraping and loading into storage. The slurry system manages 90-96% moisture manure in tanks. The lagoon system uses flushing to collect and store highly diluted manure that can be pumped for irrigation. All aim to minimize waste and odors while providing sufficient storage.

DAIRY WASTE MANAGEMENT
What is dairy? • A facility for the extracting and processing animal milk such as cow and goats. • Important because the supply of milk is a commercial industry What do dairy produce? • Dairy produce different kind of products for our daily needs. • The product produced from the dairy such as yogurt, cheese, butter, milk powder and skimmed milk. • Dairy also produce beef meat when the cow is no longer productive. But… How do they manage the waste from the dairy?? • The waste from the dairy is known as manure. This manure is the cow’s droppings. Usually this droppings is about 4 pounds of dry straw per cow per day. • The dairy in United States of America commonly use three types of system to manage the dairy waste. There are: 1. Solid waste system 2. Slurry waste system 3. Lagoon waste system Solid Waste System • Manures 75 to 80 percent of moisture content. • The manure must be in solid form before it can be handled. • To be handled as solid, the manure must have the liquid off or the bedding is added to the manure. • In this system, there are another three system that are used. There are: scraping, loaders and manure storage • Scraping is use to scrape semisolid manure into a holding area where the liquids are allowed to drain off. • Usually small tractors is used in scraping the semisolid manure. • At the loaders, the manure is remove by using tractor. The tractor can remove manure from large areas with high clearances. This functions better and more dependable plus, lessen time and labor expended. • Manure storage is used to store manure because it has most handling systems that is weather. • A minimum of 60 day storage is recommended and the area should have all-weather access with surface runoff water is diverted from the storage area. • The draining liquid is then directed to a soil-plant filter, lagoon or holding pond. A roof, can eliminate the need for collecting and storing runoff from the storage area. Slurry Waste System • Manure with 90 to 96 percent moisture content can usually be handled as fluid but may require special pump. • This system is designed to minimize dilution because it uses tank wagons for transportation and applications. • Slurry can be stored in earthen basins, below-ground and above-ground concrete tanks and unlined metal tanks. Designed for a 120-minimum day of storage capacity. Lagoon Waste System • Handle highly diluted manure that can be pump through the irrigation systems. • Flushing is the preferred method of manure collecting and transportation. • It is complement because of its storage low cost and do not cause unacceptable odor problems. • It is designed for a 365-day storage capacity with all the manure going into the lagoon Conclusions • Apart from the waste management system mentioned, there is also other system that is used by the dairy, but the most commonly used systems is the one that have been mentioned.
