    World War I was one of the largest wars in history, involving over 30 countries from 1914 to 1918. It is estimated that over 65 million soldiers fought and over 37 million casualties occurred. The immediate cause was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist. This sparked escalating alliances that drew European powers into the war. New weapons like tanks, airplanes, and chemical weapons were introduced. After over four years of fighting and over 15 million deaths, an armistice was at last reached in 1918.
