A Technical Seminar Presentation On: Bionic Eye

The document discusses bionic eyes and their components and working. It summarizes that bionic eyes use a camera to capture scenes, a processor to convert images to electrical signals, a transmitter to send signals to a receiver near the eye implant, and electrodes to stimulate the optic nerve. Bionic eyes can help the blind identify objects and navigate but have disadvantages like difficulty repairing devices and high cost. The technology provides hope for restoring vision for conditions that damage the retina.

Abstract

 Blindness is a devastating disease which can happen due to various reasons

such as due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and many other age-related macular
degenerations (AMD). In this kind of disease, the photoreceptor cells gets
degenerated and damages the retina and due to which a person losses his
vision power. Therefore, bionic eye plays a vital part by restoring the vision.
Technologies that are involved in bionic eyes are-multiple unit artificial retina
chip system (MARC), artificial silicon retina system (ASR), ARGUS II, MIT HARVARD
device. Holographic technology is used by which a person can again live a
new life independently. This method take place through a small surgery
replacing complicated surgeries. An advancement in the present research can
be done by improving the technology is described in this paper. The quality of
images to the bionic eye will be more clear by increasing the number of
electrodes in the retinal implant. Platinum and iridium are currently used for
implants but these metals deteriorates within 5 to 10 years. Instead of these
metals if diamond device are implanted inside the eye then it will not
deteriorate.
WORKING OF HUMAN EYE

 The eye is one of the most important Organ in our body Before we learn about
ASR, it is important to know about natural retina.
 The light sensitive of the cells gets activated with incidence of light and generate
electric signals. These electric signals are sent to the brain by optic nerves and
the brain interprets the electric signals in such a way that we see an image.
WHAT IS ASR?

 A visual prosthesis, is an experimental visual device intended to

restore functional vision in those suffering from partial or total
blindness.
In 1983 Joao Lobo Antunes , a world renowned Portuguese
doctor, implanted a bionic eye in a person born blind.
The brothers Alan Chow & Vincent Chow have developed a
microchip containing 3500 photo diodes, which detect light
and convert it into electrical impulses which is called as ASR
Working of ASR

 The ASR microchip is a 2mm diameter silicon chip which contains

5,000microscopic solar cells called "Micro photodiodes“.
 It detects light & convert it into electrical impulses, which stimulate healthy
retinal ganglion cells and these cells are sent to Brain by optic nerve.
COMPONENTS REQUIRED FOR BIONIC
EYE.
 DIGITAL CAMERA
 VIDEO PROCESSING UNIT
 RADIO TRANSMITTER
 RADIO RECEIVER
 RETINAL IMPLANT
WORKING OF BIONIC EYE

 The camera mounted on a pair of eyeglasses, captures the scene in front of the
wearer and sends to VPU on the patient's belt.
 The processor translates the image into a series of signals that the brain can
understand.
 Now the F transmitter sends the signal to the RF receiver which is near the eye
implant wirelessly.
 Receiver attains the transmitted signal and demodulation is done which is sent to
the microelectrode strip.
 These electrodes converts it into electrical pulses and provide it to the optic
nerve
ADVANTAGE
S
 It identifies the location or movement of objects and people.
 Helps in other activities of daily life, such as detecting street curbs and walking on
a sidewalk with outstepping off.
 Upgradable external hardware &software to benefit from future innovations.
DISADVANTAGES :

 Repairing is difficult if any of the devices got damaged.

 Those who lost their visions due to other reasons could not use this device.
 It may not work for people blinded as children or as infants.
 The cost of the device is too high as $70,000.
CONCLUSION :

 Revolutionary piece of Technology.

 It is the first useful artificial eye is now helping a blind man walk safely around
and read large letters.
 Good news for the patients who ever suffering from Macular Degeneration &
Retinitis Pigmentosa.
 Hope in INDIA also we will acquire this technology soon.
