CFD Anlaysis of Port Fuel Injection in Di-Ci Engine

This document summarizes a CFD analysis of port fuel injection in a DI-CI engine. It discusses modeling the engine in Fusion 360 and simulating fuel injection and combustion using Autodesk CFD software. The analysis aims to control emissions like HC, CO, CO2 and NOx while improving engine efficiency. Results are presented showing variations of these emissions over the crank angle. The conclusion is that port fuel injection helps premix air and fuel better to control emissions and increase piston filling rate and efficiency.

Abstract
• At part load conditions, effective utilization of duel fuel is critical for drivability
of and DI-IC engine driven automobile, with control the emission characteristics.
• It becomes cardinal to study the mixture preparation in engines to understand the
injection strategy that helps in achieving the prime objectives of control the
emission characteristics and reliable operation.
• A engine design is developed in FUSION 360 and then used same software to
simulate the dual fuel Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engine. The engine uses a higher
compression ratio than a spark ignition engine to heat air in the engine cylinder.
• The high compression ratio leads to higher efficiency but diesel engines must be
stronger, and therefore heavier to contain the higher pressure. This makes them
more expensive.
• The engines also produce greater quantities of some emissions than spark
ignition engines. The main objective of this project is controlling the emission
characteristics (HC, Co, Co2, NOx) and increases the engine efficiency.

Introduction
1. The design and manufacture of Direct Injection Compression Ignition
(DICI) engines is under significant pressure for improvement. The
next generation of engines need to be compact, light, powerful, and
flexible to produce less pollution and less fuel.
2. The performance of DICI engine depends upon complex interactions
between mechanical, fluid, chemical, and electronic systems.
However, the challenge in design is the complex fluid dynamics of
turbulent reacting flows with moving parts through the intake/exhaust
manifolds, valves, cylinder, and piston.
3. Insight provided by CFD analysis helps guide the geometry design of
parts, such as ports, valves, and pistons; as well as engine parameters
like valve timing and fuel injection.

CFD MODELING OF DI-CI ENGINES
 Scope of CFD Modeling
• CFD modeling of DICI engines is essential to assess the combustion of
new mechanism of fuel and air inlets and emissions are reduced at a
lower cost of analysis
• CFD) simulations are important for the development of modern DICI
engines: spark-ignited, two-stroke, diesel injection, homogeneous
charge compression ignition (DICI) and dual-fuel reciprocating
engines.
• CFD analysis helps to optimize engine performance using commercial
CFD software
• CFD results provide insights for further improvements in engine
technologies

CONVERGE
• Converge is also a popular CFD platform for automatic meshing
and simulation for DICI Engines by selection turbulence and
combustion models
• CONVERGE uses hexahedral grid adaptive meshing technique to
get better resolution around the flames and high velocity gradient
regions

CONCLUSION
We have seen the simulation results after the introduction of fuel in the
intake manifold through spray injectors. The motive will be to ensure
good premixing of air and fuel and avoid impingement and droplet
deposition on the walls and the valve. The two fuel has been injected
through port fuel injection which tends to control the emission
characteristics. When two fuels are used the filling rate will increases in
the piston, therefore the efficiency of the piston is increased. This work
will ensure complete validation of the CFD results.
