Hypothesis

Formulation
At the end of the lesson, the students
should be able to:

• define hypothesis
• identify the different types of hypothesis
• characterize well-formulated hypothesis
• familiarize with the steps in formulating
hypothesis
• characterize a workable hypothesis
What is
hypothesis?
What is hypothesis?
• Educated guess
• Tentative statement
• Specific, testable prediction
• Typically written as a claim
• Possible answer to your research questions
Variables
•Independent Variables
•Dependent Variables

Hypothesis
• Is your hypothesis based on your research
topic?
• Can your hypotheses be tested?
• Does your hypothesis include independent
and dependent variables?
In order to form hypothesis, you
should take these steps:
 Collect as many observations about a topic or problem as you can.
 Evaluate these observations and look for possible causes of the
problem.
 Create a list of possible explanations that you might want to explore.
 After you have developed some possible hypotheses, think of ways
that you could confirm or disprove each hypothesis through
experimentation. This is known as falsifiability.
Hypothesis Checklist
 Does your hypothesis focus on something that you
can actually test?
 Does your hypothesis include both an
independent and dependent variable?
 Can you manipulate the variables?
 Can your hypothesis be tested without violating
ethical standards?
What to inlcude in
your hypothesis?
Most Common Types of
Hypotheses
 Simple hypothesis  Statistical hypothesis
 Complex hypothesis  Causal hypothesis
 Null Hypothesis  Associative hypothesis
 Alternative Hypothesis  Directional hypothesis
 Logical hypothesis  Non-directional hypothesis
 Empirical hypothesis
Simple Hypothesis
predicts the relationship
between two variables; the
independent and the dependent
variables
Complex Hypothesis
describes the relationship between
variables. However it’s a relationship
between two or more independent
variables and two or more
dependent variables.
Null Hypothesis
denoted by H0, proposes that two factors
or groups are unrelated and that there is
no difference between certain
characteristics of a population or
process.
Alternative Hypothesis
denoted by H1, is a claim
that is contradictory to the
null hypothesis.
Logical Hypothesis
a proposed explanation using
limited evidence. You do this by
putting your theories or
postulations to test.
Empirical Hypothesis
also known as working hypothesis,
comes to life when a theory is being
put to test using observation and
experiment.
Statistical Hypothesis
an examination of a portion of a
population or statistical model. In
this type of analysis, you use
statistical information from an area.
Collecting Data on
hypothesis
Steps in formulating hypothesis
1. Define your variables
2. Study in-depth the variables
3. Specify the nature of relationship
4. Identify and study the population/samples
5. Make sure variables are testable

Characteristics and Importance
of a Well-formulated Research
Hypothesis
 Testable and Verifiable  Focus
 Simple and Clear  Direction
 Relevant  Objectivity
 Clarity  Add to the body of
knowledge
Functions of hypothesis
1. It is a temporary solution of a problem concerning with
some truth, which enables an investigator to start his
research work.
2. It offers a basis in establishing the specifics what to
study for and may provide possible solutions to the
problem.
3. Each hypothesis may lead to formulate another
hypothesis.
Functions of hypothesis

4. A preliminary hypothesis may take the shape of final

hypothesis.
5. Each hypothesis provides the investigator with definite
statement which may be objectively tested and accepted
or rejected and leads for interpreting results and drawing
conclusions that is related to original purpose.
Threefold functions of
hypothesis
a) To delimit the field of the investigation.
b) To sensitize the researcher so that he should work
selectively, and have very realistic approach to the
problem.
c) To offer the simple means for collecting evidences to
the verification.
Characteristics of a Workable
Hypothesis
1. Hypothesis should be conceptually clear
2. Hypothesis should be specific
3. Hypothesis should be empirically testable
4. Hypothesis should be related to available technique
5. Hypothesis should be related to a body of theory or
theoretical question
Let’s try formulating
hypothesis
based on the given
scenarios
1.Parents of students who are in
favor of attending face-to-face
classes feel that their children
have advantage over those
students who will attend classes
remotely.
2. Majority of Grade 12 STEM
students of VALMASCI prefer
the blended distance learning
rather than attending face-to-face
classes.
3. There are more female
students who get admitted
in VALMASCI than male
students.
4. 65% of the students
who get admitted in
VALMASCI come from
private schools.
5. Quarterly awarding
of certificates helps
improve students’
performance.
