Week 2 - General Mathematics

The document discusses various operations that can be performed on functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and composition of functions. It provides examples of applying each operation to sample functions and interactive exercises for the student to practice. Key concepts covered are defining the sum, difference, product, quotient, and composite of two functions f and g based on applying the fundamental operations to f(x) and g(x).

INTRODUCTION
When a fundamental operation is applied to two or
more given functions, a new function can be formed.
01
Sum and Difference of
Functions
Starting Point

If f and g are functions with domains and , respectively, their sum

is the function defined as

(f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

and their difference is the function defined as

(f - g)(x) = f(x) - g(x).

Example 1

Let f(x) = 2x3 – 5x + 4 and g(x) = 3x2 + 2x – 6. Find (f + g)(x).

Solution:

(f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

(f + g)(x) = (2x3 – 5x + 4) + (3x2 + 2x – 6)
(f + g)(x) = 2x3 – 5x + 4 + 3x2 + 2x – 6
(f + g)(x) = 2x3 + 3x2 - 3x – 2
Example 2

Let f(x) = 2x3 – 5x + 4 and g(x) = 3x2 + 2x – 6. Find (f - g)(x).

Solution:

(f - g)(x) = f(x) - g(x)

(f - g)(x) = (2x3 – 5x + 4) - (3x2 + 2x – 6)
(f - g)(x) = 2x3 – 5x + 4 - 3x2 - 2x + 6
(f - g)(x) = 2x3 - 3x2 - 7x – 10
What if?

Let f(x) = 7x + 5 and g(x) = 2x2 - 5.

1. Find (f + g)(x)

2. Find (f - g)(x)
Your turn!

Let f(x) = and g(x) = .

1. Find (f + g)(x)

2. Find (f - g)(x)
Activity 2

1. Find (f + g)(x).

2. Find (f - g)(x).

3. Find (g - h)(x).

4. Find (f - h)(x).
02

Product of Functions
If f and g are functions with domains and , respectively, their
product is the function defined as

(f · g)(x) = f(x) · g(x)

Example 1
Let f(x) = x + 2 and g(x) = x + 3. Find (f · g)(x).
Solution:

(f · g)(x) = f(x) · g(x)

(f · g)(x) = (x + 2)(x + 3)
(f · g)(x) = x2 + 5x + 6
Example 2
Let f(x) = and g(x) = . Find (f · g)(x).
Solution:

(f · g)(x) = f(x) · g(x)

(f · g)(x) = ·
Factoring will make this easier.
(f · g)(x) = ·
(f · g)(x) = 1 Cancellation.

03

Quotient of Functions
If f and g are functions with domains and , respectively, their
quotient is the function defined as

()(x) =
Example 1

Let f(x) = x + 2 and g(x) = x + 3. Find ()(x).

Solution:

()(x) =
()(x) =

composite function f and g is defined as

(f ⚪ g)(x) = f[g(x)]
Example 1

Solution:

(f ◯ g)(x) = f[g(x)]
(f ◯ g)(x) = -5(x + 3) - 7
(f ◯ g)(x) = -5x – 15 – 7
(f ◯ g)(x) = -5x – 22
