Understanding PTS 70107011

The preservation of old & new equipment &

piping standing idle
3 Principal Requirements
• Temporary preservation
– For plant operating on a cyclic programme, i.e. where the
period of idleness between operating periods may be about 2
months (1 year for civil engineering items)
• Short-term preservation
– For plant which is to be shut down for 2 months or more, and
recommissioned within 1 year (2 years for civil engineering
items)
• Long-term preservation
– For plant which is to be shut down for recommissioning 1 year
or more later (2 years or more for civil engineering items)
Economics – to consider
• Preservation
• On-going services, inspection and safety
checks
• Recommissioning
• Extension of idleness
Things to consider
• Climate & cyclic operations
• Rain, Moisture, High humidity
• Temperatures below zero
• Sand & Dust
• Idle rotating equipment
• Underground drainage piping  PTS

Rust Preventatives
Shell Ensis Oil • Forms non-drying oily film
(grade N) • Protect parts not subjected to much handling
• Suitable for internal protection
• Up to 12 months protection for equipment unsheltered outdoor conditions at temp
<80degC

Petronas • 4 viscosity grades (10W, 20, 30, 40)

MOTOLUB CS3 • Protect non-turbocharged internal combustion engines during storage
Oils • Replace the normal service lubricant for short period before shutdown

Petronas • 5 viscosity grades (32, 46, 68, 78, 100)

Jenteram HC Oils • For long-term preservation of steam turbines

Shell Ensis Fluids • Contain volatile solvents  solvents evaporate to leave protective film (maybe oily,
grease-like, or hard; depend on grade)
• Displace water
• Hard films are resistant to handling, but less easy to remove
• Grade S, T, V
• Protect equipment stored indoors up to 18 months, or under shelter outdoors
up to 12 months
• Temp < 40degC
• Grade T, V  hard thick film, specially designed for outdoor
• Grade C  Very strong dewatering properties, suitable for pretreating before
applying other grades
Rust Preventatives
Shell Ensis • Grease-like
Compound • Durable protection, can withstand considerable handling
CA • Up to 12 months outdoor
Vapor phase • Internal protection of turbines, compressors, hydraulic systems, bearings, engines, HEXs,
corrosion pipes, vessels, etc
inhibitors • 2 types: 1) VPI, 2) VSI
• VPI (Vapor Phase Inhibitors)
• Crystalline powders, slowly vaporize into enclosed space
• Avoid direct contact of VPI powder to non-ferrous metals & painted surfaces
• Do not use with desiccant
• Various grades: VPI 260, 280, 260F, 280F, 300, 350 (cont. next page)
• VSI (Vapor Space Inhibitors) concentrate
• Oily concentrate
• Added to lubricating / seal oil systems when equipment is half-filled
• Typical grade  8325
• Vapor absorbed as invisible film on protected surfaces
• Effective protection at oil temp range of 15-70degC, up to 12 months
• Max efficiency, at temp 30degC, oil-to-surface distance < 2m
• Lower temp  less distance
• Higher temp > 30degC  increase distance
• Not necessary to be removed prior startup
Rust Preventatives
Vapor phase VPI 260 • General purpose
corrosion • Long period protection
inhibitors • Exterior & interior pipe surfaces, HEXs and packaging during transits
VPI 280 • Surface protection in acidic environments
• HEXs, steam boilers, diesel engine coolant systems, packaging during transits
VPI 260F • Free flowing  protect areas difficult to access
+ 280F • Use with VPI 260, 280
VPI 300 • Protect metals in water of humid atm
• Emulsion paint cans, spray cans, pumps, compressors
VPI 350 • For combined protection scheme
• Use in water or humid atm
• Preferred use in non-air tight containers & longer term protection
• Marine engines, HEXs, car engines
Exterior protection
Cocooning • Envelop equipment in single plastic coating
• Coating; either spray 
• Directly onto eqpmt body
• Onto special wrapping or paper or wire netting
• Conform to Manufacturer’s recommendations
• Where possible, envelope should be pressurized by inert gas (small
overpressure)
Painting • Routine maintenance painting programmes
Coating • For bright-finished moving parts of mechanical eqpmt  Shell
Rhodina grease no. 2 / Shell Ensis Fluids / Shell Ensis Compounds
• Preferably stored under cover
Wrapping • Use waterproof paper or VPI paper
• Stored under cover
Interior protection
Oil coating • Application by 1) spray, 2) filling & subsequent draining
• Use Ensis Oil Grade N or light oil of medium viscosity (approx. 35mPa.s
at 38degC) to form a protective film on the surface
Filling • To consider strength of foundation
• Consider expansion of the filling fluid (gas oil / inhibited fresh water /
inert gas)
Vapour- • Internal protection for engines, bearings, turbines, HEXs, pipes,
phase drums, small tanks & like eqpmt
corrosion • Ensure no water pockets, dry, closed off from atm
inhibitor • If not filling eqpmt with Ensis Oil grade N  periodically splashing oil,
for e.g.
• Rotate moving parts
• Add VSI concentrate
• Hang small bag with VPI powder above liquid
Dry inert • Protect by drying the air or displace by inert gas (nitrogen), & maintain
gas filling slight positive internal pressure
• No internal pressure required if desiccant or VPI is used
Interior protection
Desiccant • Use drying agent (eg. silica gel) inside closed eqpmt
• Put in suitable container & renew periodically
• Not to be used with VPI
Electric • Consider following methods:
heating • Fan heaters; for space heating (sub-stations, control rooms,
basements)
• Warm air (strip heating, electric trace heating or lamp bulbs) for
cocooned eqpmt or enclsed
• Anti-condensation heaters for electrical eqpmt
