Common Tools and Processes

Boring is a machining process that enlarges existing holes in a workpiece using single-point cutting tools on a boring machine. There are several types of boring machines including vertical, horizontal, precision, and jig boring machines. Vertical boring machines can machine large heavy parts and position multiple tools simultaneously. Horizontal boring machines position the cutting tool relative to the workpiece faceplate. Jig boring machines provide extremely high accuracy for precision parts. Safety precautions must be followed when operating boring machines to prevent injury.

COMMON TOOLS AND

PROCESSES
BORING
-Is a process of producing circular internal profile on a hole
made by drilling or another process.
-Is the process of cutting the internal surfaces of an existing
hole, where the goal may be enlarging the hole or to
achieve higher tolerance and finish in the product.
-Is the process of enlarging a hole that is already in the
material; it may be a hole made by drilling or in the casting.
-Can also be done on milling machines and lathes.
BORING MACHINE
-Is one of the vesatile machine tool used to enlarge already
drilled hole.
-Is used to bore holes in large and & heavy parts such as
engine frame, steam engine cylinder, machine housing etc.
which are practicaly imposible to hold and to rotate in a
engine lathe or drilling machine.
-Can be horizontal or vertical according to the orientation of
the axis of rotation of the machine spindle.

TYPES OF BORING MACHINE
• Precision Boring Machine
• Vertical Boring Machine
• Horizontal Boring Machine
• Jig Boring Machine
PRECISION BORING MACHINE
-The precision boring machine uses single
point tools to machine surface rapidly and
accurately.
-Cemented cardibe and diamond tipped
single point tools are operated at a very high
cutting speed to produce accurately sized
holes wiht a fine surface finish.
-Feeding movement may be provided by
tool or by work and machine can be vertical
or horizontal type.
VERTICAL BORING MACHINE
-A vertical boring mills is used for
large, heavywork parts with
diameters up to 12 meters.
-The typical boring mill can position
and feed several cutting tools
simultaneously. The workpart may
be mounted on a rotating worktable.
VERTICAL BORING MACHINE
HORIZONTAL BORING MACHINE
-In horizontal boring operation,
boring bar is mounted in a tool
slide, which position is adjusted
relative to the spindle face plate
to machine different diameters.
The boring bar must be
supported on the other end
when boring long and small
diameter holes.
HORIZONTAL BORING MACHINE
JIG BORING MACHINE
-Most accurate of all machine tool
-Jig boring machines used for
production jig, fixture, tools, and
other precision parts which require
high degree of accuracy.
-Jig boring machine resembles in
appearance to a vertical milling
machines but both they are
different.
JIG BORING MACHINE
-Spindle & other parts are extremly
rigid to resist deflection & vibration.
-Spindle run in preloaded antifriction
bearings.
-Jig boring machines required to be
operated in temperature controlled
room where temperature maintained
constant.
CUTTING TOOL FOR BORING (Boring Bar)

-The typical boring bar is shown in

the figure. When boring with a
rotating tool, size is controlled by
changing the radial position of the
tool slide, which holds the boring
bar, with respect to the spindle axis
of rotation. For finishing machining,
the boring bar is additonaly
mounted in an adjustable boring
head for more precise controlof the
bar radial position.
BORING BAR
BORING HEAD OR CUTTER HEAD
-Boring heads are used for
mounting cutters while machining
large diameter holes where a
standard boring bar is unsuitable
due to samller diameter or
overhaging of cutter.
-Two or more cutter helds on boring
head.
-Boring head supports tool to
reduce machine time due to large
number of cutting edges.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
• Wear proper eye and ear protection.
• Never leave the key in the chuck. Remove the keys from the
chuck immediatly after securing or removing the bit.
• Never wear jewelry, gloves, ties, loose clothing, or clothing with
long sleeves. Keep long hair tucked under a hat.
• Use the rip fence as a backstop and hold the stock firmly against
both the worktable and the fence. If you can't use the rip fence
use the miter guage or clamp the stock to the worktable.
• Use the accesories and bit designed to be mounted in power
drills.
• Never drill or bore metal freehand. Always clamp the metal to the
worktable and backup stock, or the rip and back-up stock.
