ROUNDING OFF
NUMBERS

Mrs. Santos bought a brand new car. The car’s cost was Php 1,680,000. She
paid about Php 1,700,000 for the car.

You say that Php 1,700,000 is the rounded number of Php 1,680,000. Rounded
number is not an exact number. It is the closest number which can be more or
lesser. Sometimes, you do not need an exact answer, you need rounding
off to make the computation easier.

Use symbol ≈ which means approximately equal to.


There are two ways to round off numbers.

1. Using a Number Line


In a number line, look at the number to which the given number is closest to.
Example : Round off 179 000 in the hundred thousands place.

100 000 179 000 200 000

The number 179 000 is closer to 200 000. So 179 000 ≈ 200 000.
2. Following the Rules in Rounding Off Numbers

a) Round Up
Look at the digit to the right of the rounding digit. If it is 5 or more, add 1 to the
rounding digit and then replace all other digits to the right with 0.

Examples:
1. 78 264 ≈ 78 300
2. 4 936 862 ≈ 5 000 000

b) Round Down
Look at the digit to the right of the rounding digit. If it is less than 5, retain the
rounding digit and then replace all other digits to the right with 0.

Examples :
1. 212 604 ≈ 210 000
2. 6 037 168 ≈ 6 000 000

DIVISIBILIT Y RULES
FOR 2, 5, AND 10
LESSON 1
There are 40 pupils in Ms. Navarrete’s
classroom. During the quarter, she was able
to give them activities in groups of 2, 5, and
10 without anyone being left behind. How is
this possible?

A number is divisible by another number if its


quotient has no remainder. The number 40
can be divided by 2, 5, and 10, therefore 40
is divisible by 2, 5, and 10.
Here are the visibility rules for 2, 5, and 10
1. Divisible by 2
The number is divisible by 2 if the number is even, that is
the ones digit of the whole number ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8.

EXAMPLES:

Numbers like 92, 1924, 50, 598, 846, and 7

2. Divisible by 5
The number is divisible by 5 if the ones digit of
the whole number ends with 0 or 5.

EXAMPLES:

Numbers like 75, 990, 1 600, 5 230, and

3. Divisible by 10
The number is divisible by 10 if the number is a
multiple of 10, that is the ones digit of the whole
number ends in 0. Numbers divisible by 10 are also
divisible by 2 and 5.

EXAMPLES:

Numbers like 80, 60, 700, and 10 000 000
