CHAPTER 1 5th Grade
ROUNDING OFF
NUMBERS
LESSON 2
Mrs. Santos bought a brand new car. The car’s cost was Php 1,680,000. She
paid about Php 1,700,000 for the car.
You say that Php 1,700,000 is the rounded number of Php 1,680,000. Rounded
number is not an exact number. It is the closest number which can be more or
lesser. Sometimes, you do not need an exact answer, you need rounding
off to make the computation easier.
The number 179 000 is closer to 200 000. So 179 000 ≈ 200 000.
2. Following the Rules in Rounding Off Numbers
a) Round Up
Look at the digit to the right of the rounding digit. If it is 5 or more, add 1 to the
rounding digit and then replace all other digits to the right with 0.
Examples:
1. 78 264 ≈ 78 300
2. 4 936 862 ≈ 5 000 000
b) Round Down
Look at the digit to the right of the rounding digit. If it is less than 5, retain the
rounding digit and then replace all other digits to the right with 0.
Examples :
1. 212 604 ≈ 210 000
2. 6 037 168 ≈ 6 000 000
