Grade 8 2nd Quarter Lesson

The document discusses methods for graphing linear equations in two variables, including: 1. Using two points to find the slope and y-intercept and graph the line in slope-intercept form. 2. Using the x-intercept and y-intercept to graph the line, found by setting y=0 and x=0 respectively. 3. Using the given slope and a point to graph the line by applying the slope to find another point and connecting the points. It also discusses how to determine if two lines from a system of equations are parallel, perpendicular, intersecting or coincident based on comparing their slopes and y-intercepts.

Number 1.

y – 3x + 2

Solution:
Equate the expression to zero y -3x + 2 = 0
Apply APE y -3x + 3x + 2 - 2 = 0 + 3x - 2
y -3x + 3x + 2 - 2 = 0 + 3x - 2

Slope intercept form ( y = mx + b) y = 3x - 2

Slope or m = 3x (get the numerical coefficient of x)

Slope or m = 3
y–intercept or b = y = 3x – 2 (get the constant on the equation)

y–intercept or b = -2

Using the Two Point Form

Slope or m =

Checking to the graphs by plotting
Given: the two points, from (5, 0) the run is
(5, 0) and (0, 1) 5 and the rise is 1.
( y-axis

The slope is - which means that the

line will fall to the right. 1 is rise 5
and 5 is run. 4
3
The line crosses the y-axis at (0, 1), so the 2
y intercept is 1. Write the equation in (0, 1)

1 2 3 4 5
m = - and b = 1,
therefore :
run = 5 units

B. Given the x– and y– intercepts
x-intercept – the point, (x, 0), where the line crosses the x- axis
y-intercept – the point, (0, y), where the line crosses the y-axis

To graph a line using this method…

1. Find the x-intercept by letting y = 0 and solving for x
2. Find the y-intercept by letting x = 0 and solving for y
3. Plot both intercepts on the graph and connect with a straight line
(0, 4)

Example: Find the x- and y-intercepts of 2x + y = 4.

If x = 0, then Substitute 0 to the equation thus,
2(0) + y = 4, 0 + y = 4, y = 4
The y-intercept (0, y), substitute 4 to y;
Therefore, the y-intercept is (0, 4) (2, 0)
If y = 0, then Substitute 0 to the equation thus,
2x + 0 = 4, 2x = 4, = x= x=2

The x-intercept (x, 0), substitute 2 to x;

Therefore, the x-intercept is (2, 0)

C. The slope (m) and a point on the line

Example: m = 2 and point (-3, -2)

m=2 Express the slope into ratio or fraction
m= m= The rise is 2 and the run is 1. y-axis

The graph of systems of linear equation may coincide, may be parallel, perpendicular or
intersecting.

y = – 3, -1
(1, -1)
Therefore, the point is (x, y), -2
then (0, -3) -3 (0, -3)

Solution: y = 2x + 1 -5
Slope or m = 2
Slope or m = , m =
If x = 0, then
y = 2x + 1, y = 2(0) + 1, y = 0 + 1, Using the slope and intercept in graphing.
y = 1,
Therefore, the point is (x, y), The lines are parallel . Looking back to the two

(d) If each line in the system has the same slope and the
same y-intercept, the lines are coincident. The lines are on
top of each other.
Eq. 1: -2x + y = 2 Eq. 2: -x + y = -1
-2x + 2x + y = 2x + 2 -x + x + y = x -1
y = 2x + 2 y=x-1

By checking, substitute the value of x

Equation 1: -2x + y = 2

2=2

Equation 2: -x + y = -1
-1(-3) + (-4) = -1
3 – 4 = -1

-1= -1
