General Lab Safety Part 3

List of basic the
tools & machines:
1. Basic Hand Tools
2. VEX Robotics & VEX V5 Robotics
3. First Robotics Competition (FRC)
4. 3D Printer Safety
5. Laser Engraver & Cutter Safety
6. Sewing & Embroidery Machine Safety
7. Computer Numeric Control (CNC) Router
Safety
8. Soldering Iron, Iron, & Glue Gun Safety
Only use a tool for its
specific purpose EXAMPLE:
• Pry Bar – it is made of
ductile metal, & is safe to
use to pry on stuff!
• Screw Driver – it is made
of hardened steel, & it will
shatter, leaving sharp
edges, & sending sharp
pieces of metal flying
away through the air
when used as a pry bar!
Clothes Iron
• Burn hazard
1. from the iron.
2. from the board.
3. from the steam.
4. from the article of
clothing being ironed.
• Electrical shock: contains
water, care must be taken
when refilling with water, check
the cord it can fray, &
especially the cord can become
melted by the iron itself!
• It is a burn hazard.
Soldering Iron
1. Tip can burn you.
2. Item being soldered can
burn you.
3. Drops of hot solder can
burn you &/or clothing.
• Solder could contain toxic
LEAD!
NO!!!
• I purchase lead free
You
solder. However, just for
must
the sake of safety always
not do treat it as though it does
this have lead!
• Flux fumes are also toxic!
Hot Glue Gun
• Do not touch the tip
• Use only the correct
size glue stick
• Do not put anything
except glue in the gun
• Wait until glue is completely melted
before using
• Glue can burn you through thin materials
that you are gluing together.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Many tools used in this class OK in this
classroom. Outside of this classroom they
are considered as though you have a Weapon
at School! This goes for many classes here at
school: Art, Science, Shop, & etc.
• Craft knives & other such tools are
expected to stay in the classroom / shop
area of B103 at all times!
• Taking the tools beyond the door of
classroom / shop area of B103 & the
school district could consider you as
having a weapon at school!!!
Craft Knives / Razorblades
• Craft knives stay in
the classroom/shop!
• Must be carried
with cap on them
&/or in their case.
• Cut pushing them away
from the body.
• Always going to utilize a
cutting board underneath
the piece.
3D Printers
• Burn hazards:
1. Hot nozzles
2. Hot beds
3. Hot chambers
4. Hot materials
5. Hot solvents
• Cutting hazards: 1.
Sharp materials
2. Sharp tools
3D Printers
Chemical hazards:
1. fumes
2. solvents
3. glues
4. resins
CNC Router
• Pinching hazards It can
move without warning,
& it is more than strong
enough to remove fingers!
• Burns Hazard from the
cutter, motor, parts, &/or
scraps can all burn skin.
• Can throw broken bits
&/or scraps! Bits can
rotate at up to 22,000
RPM!
CNC Router
• Cutting Hazard with:
1. Sharp Bits
2.
Sharp Parts
3. Sharp Scraps –
a metal shaving in you
eye = a really BAD
DAY!!!
• Particulates – use
dust collection system
&/or mask.
CNC Router
• MUST have on safety glasses, preferably
googles or face shield.
• It throws shavings, we will makes literally
millions of shavings this year!!!
• Brushes & Vacuum Systems will not
catch all of them.

Lasers
• Can cause severe burns & eye
damage! Do not stare at the cutting
surface!
• Fumes & smoke
produced can be harmful &
toxic.
• Exhaust system MUST BE USED.
• Fire risk! Flammable materials can,
will, & do catch fire in machines.
Laser Engraving/Cutting
• Can cause severe
burns & eye damage!
• Fire risk! We use
them to burn /
vaporize materials at
millions of degrees!
• We are literally burning the materials.
• Therefore, we have a 100% CHANCE
OF THERE BEING A MAJOR FIRE
RISK WHILE USING THEM!
Laser Engraving/Cutting
• #1 Must be using
exhaust system.
• It takes away fumes, &
does most of the work
at controlling the fire.
• Might sounds strange, but it works! The
airflow of the blower pump & exhaust system
work together to help keep the flames from
catching &/or spreading! It blows the fire out.
• #2 Do not leave it unattended!!!
Lasering
• Blower & Exhaust system make the
lenses stay cleaner & last longer. Keeps
the flames, smoke, & fumes from coming
into contact with the lenses.
• With some materials we will need to
WET them, to keep them from catching
fire & burning up!

Sewing & Embroidery
• Sharps – hardened
steel needles moving
at 600+ RPM & with
enough force to go
through bone…
• Even sewing by hand, accidents
happen, & we can poke ourselves.
• Any needle that punctures skin will
need to be disposed of properly in a
sharps disposal.
Sewing & Embroidery
• Can be a crush &/or
pinching danger.
• However, punctures are
the most common injury.

VEX Robotics Hazard's
• Sharp Edges.
• Pinching Hazards:
especially in in
chains, sprockets, &
also in gearsets.
• Fire Hazard from
batteries.
Chains & Sprockets
• Fingers get into them
easily & they like to
hurt & HONESTLY,
MOST OF THE TIME
THEY END UP
CUTTING OFF
FINGERS!
• FRC is VERY serious
about requiring chain
guards!!!
Chainguards!!!
• FRC is VERY serious about requiring chain
guards!!!
Chainguards!!!
• We often just
design the
chains, so they
go through the
inside of a robot
we are building.
• Can you see the
chains? Yep, • We don’t have to worry
we kind of hide about chainguards this
them, which is a way, have fewer parts,
safe thing! it’s safe, & etc.
Chainguards!!!
• This chainguard was laser
cut out of polycarbonate
plastic & painted black.
• We 3D printed in a black
plastic this chainguard that
also doubles as a camera
mount.
• This chain is sandwiched
between 2 pieces of 6160,
so chainguard is the part.
9 Volt
Batteries
• 9-Volt batteries
can be found in
just about every
home & they can
be a fire hazard!
• They are
powerful enough
to start a fire.
• Always store &
dispose of them
properly!!!
7.2 Volt NIMH Batteries
• They are powerful enough to start a
fire.
• Always store & dispose of them
properly!!!
Lithium
Ion
Batteries
• #1 They are powerful enough to start a fire
from their electrical current alone.
• #2 When they are ruptured &/or they
overheat, they can & will spontaneously catch
fire & burn! They burn very vigorously!!!
• Always store & dispose of them properly!!!
Lithium Ion Batteries

• July 28th 2022, a 105 Degree Day! Mr. Gravitt

had his bag, & in the a trunk of a car.
• Was driving, AC on in vehicle. However, the
AC doesn’t really make it to the trunk very well!
While in the bag, had my laptop, & the Lithium
Ion Battery overheated!
• Literally, it swelled up 3 times normal size!
• Lucky, it didn’t catch fire & burn the vehicle!
Disposal
• Dispose of them
properly!!!
• Chemicals, Rags
with chemicals,
batteries, & etc.
in the trash.
• Catch homes,
trash cans, trash
trucks, landfills, &
etc. on fire!
• It’s NOT safe nor is it an environmentally
friendly thing to do!!!
VEX V5 Robotics
• V5 motors & lithium ion
batteries are 60% more
powerful, so that means
they are also more
dangerous because
they are stronger, much
faster (can move up to
20-30 MPH!), & also
brings in a new fire
hazard!
First Robotics
• Sharps cutting hazard
from sharp metal edges.
• 180 pound robots that
are very fast & have very
powerful motors!
• Pinching hazards – they
can & HAVE literally
taken off fingers,
especially need to watch
out for gears & chains!
