Main Features
Volcanic vent - is the spot in the Earth’s crust where
gases, molten rock, lava and rocks erupt. It is also
located at the bottom of the crater.
Volcanic crater
is a circular depression around a volcanic vent. This
is where the lava, ash, rock erupt out of a volcano. It
is located at the top of a volcano.
Caldera
when a crater becomes very wide as a result of the
collapse of the wall,
Magma chamber
it is a large underground pool or reservoir of molten
rock sitting underneath the Earth’s crust.
Lava
– when magma is expelled out of the volcano and it
reaches the Earth’s surface.
Formation of Volcanoes
Volcanic Eruption
Beneficial Effect of
Volcanic Eruption to
Humans
Agricultural Benefits
Volcanic materials ultimately break down
and weather to form some of the most fertile
soils on Earth, cultivation of which has
produced abundant food and fostered
civilizations. The internal heat associated
with young volcanic systems has been
harnessed to produce geothermal energy.
Good Source of Electricity
Geothermal energy uses the heat trapped
beneath the Earth's surface to
generate electricity. Conventional
geothermal energy utilizes steam
from natural sources such as geysers, or by
drawing water from the hot, high-pressue
depths of the Earth. The hot vapors are then
used to drive electric turbines.
Recreational and Health
Benefits
the main good effect that volcanoes
have on the environment is to provide
nutrients to the surrounding soil.
Volcanic ash often
contains minerals that are beneficial to
plants, and if it is very fine ash it is able
to break down quickly and get mixed
into the soil.
Industrial Benefits
Another benefits to volcanoes are the precious gems,
minerals and building materials that eruptions make
available. For instance, stones like pumice volcanic ash
and perlite (volcanic glass) are all mined for various
commercial uses. These include acting as abrasives in
soaps and household cleaners.
Pumice is another common volcanic material used
for manufacturing. Most notably for the production of
internal insulation and household cleaners. Also pumice
and Lava ash are used to build dams along with
blacktops.
Formation of New Land
New land is created
in volcanic eruptions. ... New land may
also emerge from lava that erupts from
beneath the water. This is one way
that new land is created. Lava erupts
into the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii,
creating new land.
Natural way of
preserving
A constant and rapid fall
of volcanic ash from a large eruption is
ideal for preserving what exists upon
the land at the time of deposition. It can
bury them intact without moving them
and without completely crushing or
burning them.
