The Passive Causative
Study these sentences:

1. I cleaned my house.
2. I had my house cleaned.

How are they different??


I cleaned my house.
This means “I cleaned it myself.”
I had my house
cleaned.
This means someone else does it.
CAUSATIVE FORM: have/get + object + past
participle
HAVE GET
SOMETHING SOMETHING
DONE DONE
to talk about things we ask
to talk about things we ask
other people to do for us, things
other people to do for us,
that we do not want to, or
things that we do not want
cannot do ourselves but is more
to, or cannot do ourselves. informal.

It emphasises the process/action rather than who performs


it.
We can use have/get something done in
variety of tenses, e.g.
● I get all my clothes made by a designer.
(present simple)
● He is having his pizza delivered.
(present continuous)
● The students had their essays checked.
(past simple)
Notice the order of words: have + object + past participle

A different word order changes


the meaning.
She has her laptop repaired.
(= Someone does it for her.)
She has repaired her laptop.
(= She did it herself recently.)

We had our eyes and ears tested.
8. My cousins are staying with us right
