LESSON FUNCTIONS
AS MODELS
OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students are

expected to:
1. Represent real-life situations using
functions, including piece-wise functions.
(M11GM-Ia-1)
2. Evaluate a function. (M11GM-Ia-2)
RELATIONS
A Relation is a rule that relates values from a set of
values (called the domain or x) to a second set of values
(called the range or y).

FUNCTIONS
A Function is a relation where each element in the
domain (x) is related to only one value in the range (y)
by some rule.

Functions

• A function f from set A to set B is a rule of

correspondence that assigns to each element x
in set A exactly one element y in set B.
• Set A is the domain (or set of inputs) of the
function f, and set B contains range (or set of
outputs).
Characteristics of a Function
1. Each element in A (domain) must be
matched with an element of B (range).
2. Each element in A (domain) is matched to
not more than one element in B (range).
3. Some elements in B (range) may not be
matched with any element in A (domain).
4. Two or more elements of A (domain) may
be matched with the same element of B
(range).

Function represented by a Graph

The vertical line test is

used to determine if a
graph represents a
function. If a vertical line is
drawn to any part of the
graph and intersects the
graph in one and only one
point, then the graph
represents a function.

PIECE-WISE

• A “piecewise function” defines the function in

pieces (or parts).
2 x  1 if x  0
f ( x)   2
 x  1 if x  0
In the function above,
if x is less than or equal to zero,
f(x) = 2x - 1; otherwise, f(x) = x2 - 1.
Translate the sentence into a piece-wise
function.

Evaluating Functions

A function is a rule of correspondence given by

an equation y = f(x) which determines the value
of y, given a value of x. More simply, the function
gives the resulting output from a given input.

Evaluating Functions

Evaluating a function means replacing the

variable in the function f(x), in this case x, with a
value from the function’s domain and computing
for the result. To denote that we are evaluating f
at x for some x in the domain of f, we write f(x).

onwards, an additional cost of P400.00 per day
is added. Represent the cost of renting a
