Lesson 5 Inverse Function 2

Here are the steps to find the inverse of a function and represent it: Given: f(x) = 2x + 3 1) Swap x and y: y = 2x + 3 2) Isolate y: x = (y - 3)/2 3) The inverse function is: f^-1(x) = (x - 3)/2 4) Create a table of values for f(x) and f^-1(x): x | f(x) | -1 | 1 | 0 | 3 | 1 | 5 | x | f^-1(x) 1 | -1 3 | 0

INVERSE FUNCTIONS

OBJECTIVES:

1. Determine the inverse of a function of a one-to-one

function in particular.
2. Represent an inverse function through it’s
a) table of values and b) graph.
3. Find the domain and range of an inverse function.
4. Graph inverse functions.
5. Solve problems involving inverse functions.
REVIEW!!!
FUNCTIONS
A Function is a relation where each element in the
domain is related to only one value in the range by
some rule.
ONE TO ONE FUNCTION

A function is a one to one if no more than

one element in the domain is paired with one
element in range. Or it is a set of input and
output values with an input value having only
one output value. Example. Input : family
member, Output: social security system no.
( as each person has a unique number).
Determine the following if it is a one to one
function;
1.Input is math teacher and output is
students in the class.
2.Input is Zip code and output is residents of
the town.
3.Input is student and output is zip code.
4.Input is Facebook Account and output is
students in the class.
Determine the following if it is a one to one
function;
1.Input is math teacher and output is
students in the class.
2.Input is Zip code and output is residents of
the town.
3.Input is student and output is zip code.
4.Input is Facebook Account and output is
students in the class.
Graph of a one to one function:
Determine the following graphs if it is a one to
one function using the Vertical and Horizontal Line
tests:
Determine the following graphs if it is a one
to one function using the Vertical and
Horizontal Line tests:
• Activity 1: Give the inverse operation of the
following, given:
1. Add 8
2. Subtract 10
3. Multiply by 5
4. Divided by 6
5. Square
6. Raise to the third power
7. Fifth root
• Activity 1: Give the inverse operation of the
following, given:
1. Add 8 (subtract 8)
2. Subtract 10 (add 10)
3. Multiply by 5 (divided by 5)
4. Divided by 6 (multiply by 6)
5. Square (square root)
6. Raise to the third power (cube root)
7. Fifth root (raise to 5)
INVERSE FUNCTION
The original function is one to one since no two y
values share the same x value.
Lets invert the values of x and y:

The inverse function is still a function since each x

values is associated to only one y value
The original function is not a one to one function since
one of its y values is paired to more than one x values.

The inverse is not even a function since one of

the x values is paired to more than one y values.
PROPERTIES OF f and its INVERSE
FUNCTION:
1. Domain of = Range of f.
2. Range of = Domain of f.
3. The graphs of f and are symmetric
with respect to the line y = x.
4.
Determine the inverse of the given function.
Then Graph each on the same cartesian plane.
Original: f(x) =3x + 1
X -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
y -8 -5 -2 -1 4 7 10
Inverse: (x) =
X -8 -5 -2 -1 4 7 10
y -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

Original: g(x) =3x + 1

Original: g(x) =3x + 1

Inverse: (x) =

y=x X -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
y -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
Determine the domain and the range of the
original and the inverse function:
  f(x) =3x + 1 (x) =
X -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 X -8 -5 -2 -1 4 7 10
y -8 -5 -2 -1 4 7 10 y -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

DOMAIN [-3,3] [-8,10]

RANGE [-8,10] [-3,3]

Note: “the inverse relation is a
reflection of the original
function across the line y = x ”.
Every point on the graph of the
relation can be reflected across
the line y = x to form the graph
of its inverse.
Determine the inverse of the given function.
Then Graph each on the same cartesian plane.

Inverse: (x) =

Original: g(x) =

y=x
X -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

Determine the domain and the range of the
original and the inverse function:
  g(x) = (x) =
X -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
X -29 -10 -3 -2 -1 6 25
