NOTES – a sign used for musical notation to
represent the relative duration and pitch of a
sound.

PARTS OF THE NOTES

1. NOTEHEAD – the oval shape section of a music note is called the notehead. It can
either be white (blank) or filled in.
TYPES OF NOTEHEAD

• OPEN NOTEHEAD – blank or white


• CLOSED NOTEHEAD – filled-in
• STEM – a straight line or “stick” attached to the notehead
• Flag/Hook – a slanting line attached at the end of a stem
Whole Note – an open notehead

Half Note – an open notehead with a stem

Quarter Note – a closed notehead with a stem


Eighth Note – a close notehead with a stem
and a hook
Sixteenth Note – a closed notehead with a
stem and two hooks
REST
a rest refers to an interval of time that a
player is not sounding a note on their
instrument.

STAFF

The staff consist of five lines and and four spaces. Each of those lines and each of thoses
spaces represents a different letter, which in turn represents a note. Those lines and spaces
represent notes sequence moves alphabetically up the staff.
TREBLE CLEFF

• There are two main clefs with which to familiarize yourself; the first is the Treble Clef.
The Treble Clef has the ornamental letter G on the far left side. The treble clef is a type
of musical notation that is used to indicate which pitch should be played when reading
and writing music. It’s also known as the G clef as when drawing a treble clef, it loops
and wraps itself around the note G on the staff.

BASS CLEF

The bass clef is shaped like an ornamental letter F, accompanied by two dots that
bracket the music note F3, which is the first F below middle C. For this reason, it is
nicknamed the F clef. The bass clef is the most common clef for double bass, bass guitar,
trombone, and timpani.

PERFORMANCE TASK

• Look at the rests and notes and choose a favorite.


• After picking your favorite note or rest, draw five on sheet of
bondpaper. You may also color the notes and rests or design them by
drawing faces. Be creative!
• Present your artwork in class. Tell the class your favorite notes, their
durations, as well as their features/characteristics.
