Systems of Linear Equations

This document discusses systems of linear equations in two variables and methods for solving them. A system of linear equations consists of two equations with two variables, where the equations can be written in the form of Ax + By = C and Dx + Ey = F. There are three main methods for solving systems of linear equations: graphical method, elimination method, and substitution method. The graphical method involves graphing both equations on a coordinate plane and finding the point of intersection. The elimination method eliminates one variable by making coefficients equal and adding the equations. The substitution method solves one equation for one variable and substitutes it into the other equation.

SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

A system of linear equations in two variables is any system that can

be written in the form.

where any of the constants can be zero with the exception that each
equation must have at least one variable in it.
 A consistent system of equations is a system of equations with at
least one solution.
 An inconsistent system of equations is a system of equations with
no solution.
 The equations of a system are dependent if ALL the solutions of one
equation are also solutions of the other equation. In other words,
they end up being the same line.
 The equations of a system are independent if they do not share ALL
solutions. They can have one point in common, just not all of them.
To solve a system of two linear equations, we want to find the values
of the variables that are solutions to both equations. In other words, we
are looking for the ordered pairs that make both equations true. These
are called the solutions of a system of equations.
