Application of IOT in Home Automation

This document discusses applying IoT in home automation (domotics). It begins with an introduction defining key terms like the Internet, IoT, and domotics. It then explains how IoT works, involving devices collecting data which is stored and allows remote control via the internet. It discusses IoT platforms and tools, how data is collected via sensors and actuators, and common IoT connectivities like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared, NFC and RFID. The goal is to automate the home using these IoT concepts.

INTRODUCTION: TERMS REVIEW

 The term Internet is short form of interconnected network. That

is a network system that connects millions of systems, servers
and devices.
 Internet of Things refers to sensors and actuators embedded in
physical objects, linked through wired and wireless networks.
 Domotics (Home Automation) is the encounter of information
technology, electrotechnics and electronics that makes a home
become ‘smart’.
HOW iot WORKS
HOW IOT WORKS
 Storage devices collect data for future use.
 Remote devices such as smart phones, tablets or computers
will control the devices connected to the internet.
 The internet will provide the platform for connectivity.
 A router or gateway will allow the devices to connect via
Wi-Fi or wired through ethernet connection.
 Thousands of devices will be connected to the internet and
or each other
How is the Data collected?

 The system interfaces with the

environment through sensors. Sensors are
devices that detect changes in certain
quantities and convert the rate of change to
signals which the system can interpret.
 The data from the sensor is collected by
the embedded hardware, compared stored
in the cloud through the internet.
 Control of the environment is made
possible by the actuators. They carry out
specific actions as determined by the
embedded hardware in smart systems, or
as determined by the user.
IOT PLATFORMS AND TOOLS
 IoT platforms help to
connect the data
to the sensor system and
gives insight
using back-end to create
a sense of the
plenteous data developed
by the many
sensors. They provide th
e template on
which the tools operate o
n. Some IOT
platforms are NODE-Red
, Rasbian,
Platform IO, Eclipse IO
T, Arduino,
Openhab and so on.

 The tools are the enab

ling technology
that send, receive, store
data, provide
necessary power and da
ta processing
operations. Some includ

workspace and the tools are the actual tools.
IOT CONNECTIVITIES
IOT CONNECTIVITIES
 Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) uses Radio waves of frequencies of 2.4GHz or
5.0GHz. It is strong, covers greater distances, and provides higher throughput. Its
range of operation is approximately 300 to 500 ft depending on Wi-Fi standard
used. Performance drops with longer distances.
 Bluetooth is a standardized protocol for sending and receiving data through a
2.4GHz wireless network. It is a secured protocol, and its perfect for short range,
low power, low cost, wireless transmission between electronic devices.
 Infrared is a form of electromagnetic radiation. It is just like the visible light
energy we see but it has a very different wavelength beyond which the human
eyes can interpret, wavelength of about 700 nanometers.
 Others are NFC (Near Field Communication), RFID (Radio Frequency
Identification)
