Presentation On " Creep Test": Rupendra S. Tanwar, Assistant Professor, MED IPS Academy IES Indore

This presentation discusses creep testing and the creep behavior of materials. It defines creep as time-dependent deformation that occurs in materials under a constant load at elevated temperatures. Different creep mechanisms are explained such as stress-assisted vacancy diffusion. The typical stages of creep behavior - primary, secondary, and tertiary creep - are outlined. The effects of increasing stress and temperature on creep are described. Methods for creep testing like tensile, compression, and flexural testing are covered. Standards for creep testing and the basic requirements for creep testing machines are also summarized. The presentation encourages performing creep tests using virtual labs.

Introduction

• Creep is a time-dependent process where a material under an applied stress exhibits a dimensional
change at high temperature.
• Material subjected to a CONSTANT LOAD at an elevated temperature (> 0.4-0.5 Tm) will creep- i.e.
EXHIBIT TIME DEPENDENT DEFORMATION
• It is a high temperature plastic deformation.
• High temperature progressive deformation of a material at constant stress is called creep.
Mechanism of Creep
Different Mechanisms are responsible for creep in different materials and under different loading and
temperature conditions. The mechanism include
• Stress-assisted vacancy diffusion
• Grain boundary diffusion
• Grain boundary sliding
• Dislocation Glide
• Dislocation creep
Creep behavior at Constant load
Stage I – Transient creep or Primary creep- Strain rate
decreases with time

Stage II – Secondary or Steady state creep- Strain

hardening is balanced by softening processes.

Stage III – Tertiary creep – Creep rate accelerated,

formation of internal cracks, voids , necking etc.
Creep: stress and temperature effects
With Increasing stress or Temperature:-

• The instantaneous strain increases

• The steady state creep rate increases

• The time to rupture decreses

Creep Testing Machine
• Usually tensile bar

• Static load applied

• Plot a curve creep strain with respect to

time

• Measure the creep strain for particular

material at constant load and temperature.
Creep Testing Methods
• Tensile creep testing
• Compression creep testing
• Flexural creep testing
- Three point bend testing
- Four point bend testing
• Stress rupture testing
• Small scale creep testing method
Tensile/ Compression creep Testing

• Direct load creep testing

• Lever arm creep testing
ASTM Standards for Creep Testing Methods

• ASTM E139-11 Standard test methods for conducting creep, creep rupture and stress rupture for
metallic materials

• C1337-10: Creep and creep rupture for continuous fiber reinforced advanced ceramics under
tensile loading at elevated temperature.
Basic requirements of a creep testing machines

• Load Frame
• Specimen Fixture
• High temperature furnace
• Extensometers
• Software for online monitoring and analaysis of data
Perform Creep test on VLab
• You can perform the creep on the Vlab
