ENERGY

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. State that energy gives the ability to do things

2. Discuss that all materials have an energy store
3. List and describe types of energy
4. Describe the three main stores of energy: gravitational
potential, chemical and elastic potential
WHAT IS ENERGY

Energy is the ability to do work.

We need energy to do everything. Without energy, nothing can

move or change.

Energy is everywhere and takes all sorts of forms.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF ENERGY?

KINETIC SOUND ELECTRICAL

CHEMICAL THERMAL GRAVITATIONAL

POTENTIAL

NUCLEAR LIGHT ELASTIC

POTENTIAL
ENERGY CAN BE STORED IN THREE MAIN WAYS:
WE KEEP SEEING THE WORD POTENTIAL!

Any form of stored energy is called

potential energy

What does
‘potential’ Potential means the ability
mean? to do something that hasn’t
been done yet.
LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT
GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIAL
ENERGY
GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIAL ENERGY

Gravitational potential energy is energy an object has because

it is high up.
This is due to gravity pulling it down

It only releases this energy when it falls down.

CHEMICAL POTENTIAL ENERGY

Chemical potential energy is the energy stored

in the chemical bonds of a substance.

These are broken down by burning or a

chemical reaction.

FOOD FUELS BATTERY

ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY:

This is stored in elastic materials such as

rubber, metal springs and elastic.
