Final Independent Sample T Test

This document discusses an independent sample t-test, which compares the means of two independent groups to determine if their population means are significantly different. It provides the learning targets of understanding t-tests, computing t-values, identifying t-critical values, and making decisions by comparing t-values and t-critical values. An example calculates the t-value and compares it to the t-critical value using data on math performance by gender to test if there is a significant difference. The document explains how to perform the t-test calculations and interpret the results to either reject or retain the null hypothesis.

Learning Targets
• Understands the concept of Independent sample t-test;
• Computes the t-value of independent sample t-test;
• Identify the t-critical values; and
• Make decision and interpretations by comparing t-value and t-critical
value.
Recall
• Ho = Null Hypothesis
(In a statistical test) the hypothesis that there is no significant difference between specified
populations, any observed difference between being due to sampling or experimental error.

• Ha = Alternative Hypothesis
The hypothesis used in hypothesis testing that is contrary to the null hypothesis.

Retain Ho - without significant difference

Reject Ho - with significant difference
• Independent Sample t-test
The Independent Sample t-test compares the means of two
independent groups in order to determine whether there is statistical
evidence that the associated population means are significantly
different.
• Example 1:
Is there any significant difference in the Mathematics performance of the
students when grouped according to their gender profile? Use alpha at 0.05 (Data
as follows):
No. Male () Female ()
1 1.5 1.25 2.2500 1.5625
2 1.5 1.75 2.2500 3.0625
3 2 2.25 4.0000 5.0625
4 2.5 2 6.2500 4.0000
5 2.5 1.25 6.2500 1.5625
Total 10 8.5 21 15.25
Mean 2 1.7

Formula to get the mean:

Substitute:
= 10 =2 = 21 =5
= 8.5 = 1.7 = 15.25 =5
• Find the df:

Decision rule:
If the computed t-value < t-critical value at (df = ) and level of significance; Retain Ho; and
If the computed t-value > t-critical value at (df = ) and level of significance; Reject Ho
