RATIONAL NUMBERS - Are the numbers that IRRATIONAL NUMBERS
can be represented as a ratio of integers. Are the numbers that cannot be represented
as a ratio of integers. Ex: 3.2345…, , , e

REVIEW
INTEGERS - Are the result of the union of
the set of whole numbers and the
negative of counting numbers.
Ex: 9, 6, 100, 0, -6, -34, -18
NEGATIVE INTEGERS - Are
real integers that are less than
0. Ex: -4, -7, -10, -28, -108

POSITIVE INTEGERS - Are the ZERO - Is a number consisting of

numbers we use in counting things. the set of natural or counting
Ex: 1, 8, 13, 89, 50, 278, 2345
number and zero. Ex: 0

Scientists deal with extremely large and
extremely small numbers.
For example:
● The distance of the sun to the nearest star,
Proxima Centauri, is about 24 700 000 000
000 miles
● A single stretococcus bacterium is about
0.00000075 meters in diameter
Writing Numbers

Notation and vice
versa
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
A number expressed in the
form , where is a decimal
number with , and is an
integer.
Scientific notation is based on
powers of 10. Numbers written in
scientific notation has two parts:
Integer exponent

¿¿ × 10
Decimal number
Between 1 and 10, including 1
The number is in scientific
notation because 4.35 is
greater than or equal to 1, but
less than 10, and the exponent
6 is an integer.
The number is not in scientific
notation because 43.5 is greater than
10.
The number is also not in scientific
notation because 0.435 is less than 1.
CHANGING
STANDARD
NOTATIONS TO
SCIENTIFIC
Place the decimal point
1 after the first nonzero
digit
Count the numbers of
places the decimal point is
2 moved, and use the
number as the number
exponent.
If the original number is
greater than 10, the exponent
3 is positive. If the original
number is between 1 and 10,
the exponent is zero.
If the original number is
4 between 0 and 1, the
exponent is negative.
Changing Scientific
Notations (Positive
Exponents) to
Standard Form
To change from scientific
notation with a positive integer
exponent to standard notation,
move the decimal point to the
right, the same number of places
indicated by the exponent.
Changing Scientific
Notations (Negative
Exponents) to
Standard Form
To change from scientific notation
with a negative integer exponent
to standard notation, move the
decimal point to the left, the same
number of places indicated by the
exponent.

0.0000503 Decimal point moves here
to get a number which is greater
than or equal to 1 but less than 10.

0.00005 03 ¿ 𝟓 .𝟎𝟑 × 𝟏𝟎 −𝟓

Because there are five decimal places

between the original position and the
new position, the exponent is -5.

to get a number which is greater
than or equal to 1 but less than 10.

0.0004 51¿ 𝟒 . 𝟓𝟏 ×𝟏𝟎 −𝟒

Because there are four decimal places

between the original position and the
new position, the exponent is -4.
