INTRODUCTION

 When you teach or aware student or community people


about the topic of concern the method of teaching should
be attractive.
 To spread awareness among people is not a easy task.
 One of the effective teaching aid for language and social
science is puppet.
DEFINITION

 Puppetryis an education cum entertaining aid in which


puppets manipulated by the performer is a person
termed as characters in a story to be depicted.
PURPOSES OF PUPPET

It develops :
 Effective listening and looking skills.
 Improve group cooperation.
 Enhance feeling of security and confidence.
 Maintain self control.
 Understand the subject content.
Cont.…..

It promotes :
 Creative ability.
 Developmental learning in language and in the fine arts.
 Experimentation in the use of language, rhythm.
 Self expression.
PRINCIPELS OF PUPPETS
Puppets action should be accompanied by short dialogues.
A puppet show should not have many characters.
Put in short duration songs and dances to arouse emotions.
The main problem should be introduced in the beginning
of the puppet show and answer comes out at the end of it
to keep up interest and suspense.
Songs or speech from the back or recorded talk are used .
There should be silent pauses in between the dialogues.
 Puppetplays must be based on action rather than
on words.
 Keep the plays short.
 Do not omit the possibilities of music and
danching as part of the puppet show.
 Adapt the puppet show to the age, background, and
tastes of the students.
PREPARATION FOR PUPPET
PLAY:
 Prepare a script for the play.
 Thestory should involve conversation between the
character, it should be humorous and entertaining.
 Each message, idea or point of view should be
introduced and developed in a logical order.
 Havea commentator introduce the characters and
make comments on the points brought out in the play.
 Keep the story simple and suitable to the audience.
 Prepare puppets of the different characters
identified for the play.
 Have the puppeteers who will handle the puppets
practice the play until they are comfortable with
their puppets.
 Finished the play with the commentator asking
questions to the audience such as ‘what do you
think?’
How to stage your own puppet show

 It'spretty much a given that children pay more


attention to stories when there are visual cues like
pictures or animations to flesh out the narrative.
Staging your own puppet show is a great way to
get your child involved in actually telling the story
as well.
Activity
Make your puppet stage:
 An ironing board makes an ideal puppet stage as you can adjust it to
any height plus it's long and shallow. Put the table cloth over the
ironing board to conceal what is going on backstage.

Organize your backstage area:


 A well- organized backstage makes for a better show, so organise the
puppets and props in the order that they will be needed. Put props in
one box and puppets in another so things don't get too confusing.
TYPES OF PUPPETS

1. HAND PUPPETS
 These are puppets controlled by
one hand which occupies the
interior of the puppet.
3. FINGER PUPPET

 An extremely simple puppet


variant which fits onto a
single finger. Finger puppets
normally have no moving
parts.
2. GLOVE PUPPET

 Thisis a like fingered glove


which fits on the hand and are
operated from below by fingers.
4. STRING/MARIONETTES
PUPPETS
 Itconsists of puppets with
hinged body parts which are
controlled by strings
produces required
movements in the puppet.
5. STICK PUPPETS

 Stick puppets are painted


cardboard/paper cut outs attached
by sticks.
 These puppets are manipulated by
teacher and students by hiding
behind a screen so that only
puppets are visible to the audience
or the class.
6. SHADOW PUPPETS

 Shadow puppets are made of


cardboard which produce
shadow on a white screen.
7. HUMAN ARM PUPPET

 Also called a two man puppet


or a “live hand” puppet.
 Itis similar to a hand puppet
but is larger and require two
puppeteers.
8. CHIN FACE PUPPET

 Itis a performance, usually of


a comical nature, involving
someone’s chin.
 By drawing or attaching eyes,
it gives the impression of a
distorted face when viewed
upside down.
9. CARNIVAL OR BODY PUPPETS

 These puppets are at least the


size of a human and often
much larger.
 One or more performers are
required to move the body and
limbs.
ADVANTAGES OF PUPPETS
 Puppets show can heighten the human emotions.
 It captures the attention of participants.
 It creates interest in learner for learning.
 It gives the knowledge in a brief period.
 It motivates the students and stimulate thinking.
 In nursing puppetry used in health education programs.
 It provide opportunity for team work.
 It provides emotional release.
DISADVANTAGES OF PUPPETS

 It needs group co-operation and co-ordination.


 It requires skills in preparation and in presentation.
 Preparation is very time consuming.
 Seating arrangement is to be managed carefully.
