Fixed-Pitch Propeller
DEFINITION

What is a Fixed-Pitch Propeller?

A fixed pitch propeller is the simplest
of propeller designs and is associated with
many light, piston engine aircraft. The angle of
attack of a fixed pitch propeller is set at
installation and cannot be changed during
aircraft operation.

Fixed-Pitch Propellers are:

•Simple
•Light
•Inexpensive
•Rugged
•Generally described in terms of Manufacture,
Diameter and Pitch
 Diameter and Pitch are generally last
four digits of the model number
 Example: C-152 has a McCauley
1A103/TCM6958
PERFORMANCE
Fixed-Pitch Propeller
PERFORMANCE

How does a fixed pitch propeller work?

The blade angle is, therefore, a compromise
between the optimum pitch for takeoff, climb
and cruise. In these installations, the propeller
is mechanically linked to the engine and its
rotational speed is directly related to the
engine speed.

Effects of Airspeed
•As Airspeed Increases
 Blade angle of attack decreases
 RPM increases

•As Airspeed Decreases

 Blade angle of attack increases
 RPM decreases

DIFFERENT TYPES

Different types of Fixed-Pitch Propeller

•Climb Prop
 Smaller pitch, allowing higher RPM and
therefore more power.
 You have to set a lower MAP to get the
same RPM at cruise, which gives you
slower airspeeds
 The climb propeller has a lower pitch,
therefore less drag.

•Cruise Prop
 Higher pitch, allowing higher MAP for
the same RPM at cruise, allowing more
power at cruise and higher fuel
consumption

•Compromise
 Most airplanes compromise to get
adequate performance at both climb and
cruise airspeeds
PROS and CONS
Advantages and disadvantages of using a fixed-pitch
propeller instead of adjustable one
PROS and CONS

ADVANTAGES
•Easy to install, operate and maintain
•Low cost
•Fixed-pitch propeller has less weight than
ground- adjustable propeller.
•Preciser concentration on efficiency
improvement of the desired flying style
•Fixed-pitch propeller has better price due to
no need of propeller hub.

DISADVANTAGES
•The disadvantage of the fixed pitch
propeller is that it has limitations in its area of
use when it comes to, loads, speeds and
maneuverability.
COMPARISON
What is the difference between fixed pitch propeller and
controllable pitch propeller?
COMPARISON

Fixed-Pitch Propeller vs
Controllable Pitch Propeller?
Unlike fixed pitch
propellers whose only
operational variable is rotational
speed, the controllable pitch
propeller provides an extra
degree of freedom in its ability
to change blade pitch.
SUMMARY
DEFINITION

A fixed pitch
propeller is the
simplest
of propeller
3 TYPES
designs and
1. Climb Prop -
cannot be LOWER pitch, therefore
changed in flight less drag.

2. Cruise Prop – HIGHER

pitch, MORE power,
HIGHER fuel
consumption

PERFORMANCE
3. Compromise –
HIGHER airspeed = ADEQUATE
MORE prop airflow = performance at climb
HIGHER RPM and cruise

LOWER airspeed =
LESS prop airflow =
LOWER RPM
