• AS A BUILDING MATERIAL
 STONES
Stones have been considered as one of the popular building material the olden days due to their
availability in abundance from the natural rocks .building stones should possess enough strength and durability.
 YEAR :- The use of stone in architecture dates back to the origins of human civilization almost
12000 years ago .
 EVOLUTION TIMELINE :- 12000 years ago – present .
 USES :- 1) stones is an essential and more permanent building material in construction than
2) based on the type , stones can be used in buildings for :-
1) flooring
2) roofing
3) masonry
4) pavings road.
 BRICKS
• AS A BUILDING MATERIAL
man has used brick for building purpose from thousands of years.
• YEAR :- Bricks date back 7000 BC (before christ ) which make them one of the oldest known building material .
• EVOLUTION :- Date back to 7000 bc – present.
• USES :- 1) They are widely used as structural as well as non structural (aesthetical ) element .
2) When used as structural bricks are used for the construction of walls ,arches ,cladding
etc .

It was used by some of the 20 th century most famous architects like the LE CORBUSIER ,
F.L .WRIGHT , AND LOUIS KHAN .
 CONCRETE

• CONCRETE is a composite material composed

of fine aggregate , coarse aggregate bonded
together with a fluid cement .
• YEAR :- 3000 BC . This year was roughly when
the first concrete like building were made .
• EVOLUTION :- 3000 BC -PRESENT .
• USES :- Concrete is used for the many
application ,including basic
foundation ,superstructures , wastewater treatment
fascilities ,parking structures , floor construction ,
and exterior surface etc.
 IRON
• Iron is used in construction of bridges and houses because it is capable of lifting the weight
of different things at one time. It can resist high load stress and strain .
• YEAR :- 19 century building material of the industrial revolution .
• EVOLUTION :- 19 CENTURY -PRESENT .
• USES :- 1) Iron has become an important architecture building component .it has been used
in four common forms wrought iron , cast iron, sheet iron and steel .
2)wrought iron was used for minor structural and decorative elements starting
in the 18th century .
 steel
• Steel is an alloy made up of iron with typically a few
percent of carbon to improve its strength and fracture
resistance compared to its strength and fracture resistance
compared to other forms of iron.
• YEAR :- Steel building first gained popularity in the
early 20th century .Their use became more widespread
during world war 2 and significantly expanded after the
war when steel became more available .
• EVOLUTION :- early 20th century - present .
• USES :- 1) Because of high tensile strength steel is
used in building , infrastructure , tools , ships , trains ,cars ,
machines ,electrical appliances , and weapons etc .
• IRON IS THE BASE METAL OF STEEL .
 GLASS
• Glass can absorb, refracts , or transmits light … the use of natural light can lower
electricity bills , brighten the rooms of buildings , and can also boost the mood of the
occupants . Glass is resistant to weather and can hold up the effect of the wind , rain
and sun .
• YEAR :- In the 1930s and 1940s .
