OVERVIEW
Association Football or Football is the most popular sport
worldwide. It is also called “soccer” in some countries. It is
an outdoor game that requires absolute athleticism as players
have to hustle and run across the field with the ball
throughout the game.
The game’s first uniform set of rules was put in place in
1863, when England’s Football Association was created.
Professional leagues began appearing in the late 1880s, first
in England and then in other countries. The Fédération
Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in
1904, and has hosted the World Cup every four years since
1930. Football has been included in the Olympic
Games since 1908. Now played on all continents in over 200
countries, with over 250 million players, it is the world’s
CONCEPT
Football is played by two teams on a large
rectangular shaped grass field. There are two goal
posts on both ends of the breadth of the field. It is
a game in which two 11-member teams try to
propel a ball into the opposing team’s goal, using
any part of the body except the hands and arms.
Only the goalkeeper, when positioned within the
penalty area in front of the goal, may use hands and
arms. The team that scores more goals wins.

THE FIELD OF PLAY

A football match can take place on either natural or


artificial grass, however the surface must be
rectangular in shape and green in colour.
The rectangular field consist two longer boundary
called touch lines and shorter lines called goal
lines.
Length of the field – MIN 90m- MAX120m
width of the field -- MIN 45m- MAX90m
NUMBERS OF PLAYERS
 A football match is played with two opposing
teams each of 11 players .
 If either team has fewer than 7 players the game
cannot start or cannot continue.
 Teams can use up to 5 substitution throughout the
game
 Once substituted A player cannot return on the
pitch.
Players equipment

Players must not wear jewellery or any other dangerous


items to themselves or other .
Basic compulsory equipment includes :
 A shirt or jersey
 Shorts / underneath or tights must be of same color.
 Socks /Shin guards
 Football boots
Referee
The Head referee enforces the laws of the game, they
have full authority and their decision is final
Referees ensure all players have the correct
equipment, signalling kick offs and final whistles,
giving fouls and punishments, etc
Referees has a set of YELLOW and RED cards given to
prevent repeated rule breaking .
If a player receive two yellow card consider it as a
RED card he is sent off the field.
Assistant referees
The head referee has two assistants , known as
ASSISTANT REFEREES

They helps the HEAD referee by showing the throw in


and corner kicks, highlights if player is offside, if a
team request to substitute or by showing the goal kicks
MATCH DURATION
 A football match duration is two equal halfs of 45 minutes.
The half time interval must not exceeds 15 minutes
 Referees may add on extra time for :
 Injury, Time wasting, injured player removed from the field.
 Added time will be played at the end of the half to make up
for any time lost during the game.
 This added time refers as INJURY TIME and is different
from EXTRA TIME which happens in knockout
competitions to determine the winner.
Ball in/out of play

The ball is out of play when the whole ball


crosses the line or the touch line
(Whether in the air or on the ground)
Besides these times the Ball is in play.
METHOD OF SCORING
 A team can only scores a goal when the ball crossing
the goal line,
 The goal is only count if no other rule violation has
taken place.
 The winning team is the team who scores the most
no. of goals, if both teams are level at the final
whistle then the match is draw
(unless in a knockout competition where extra time
has given and further taking help of penalties )
Goal line technology has introduced in football to
check whether the ball completely goes in or not.
OFFSIDE RULE

The OFFSIDE LAW is one of the most debated rules


in football
A player stand in an offside position if he is not
interfering the play. However a player is offside if he
is closer to the opponent’s goal than the second last
opponent and the ball.
A free kick is given to the opposing team when a
referee believes a player is offside .
Football is a contact sport; however
execessive force, reckless tackles handling the
ball, offensive behaviour will result in a foul
and free kick
The most common fouls are:
 Kicking , tripping the player
 Charging or pushing the opponents
 Holding or spitting the opponents
 Delberate handballs

Fouls / misconducts
FREEKICKS

Anytime a foul happens the play restarts by either


a direct freekick or indirect freekick from where
the foul was committed.
All freekicks must be taken when the ball is in
stationary form.
Penalty kicks
If a defender commits foul play in his own half
penalty box then the attacking team are
awarded the penalty kick
The penalty kick is taken from the penalty
spot
the goalkeeper must remain on his line until
the ball is struck
All the players must besides the penalty area
box.
Throw-ins

A throw in is a another way to restart the match when


the whole ball crosses the touch line then a throw in is
awarded to a team who did not touch the ball.
Players cannot score directly from the throw-ins
GOAL KICKS
 If the whole of the ball crosses the goal
line having touched an attacking players
last then defending team awarded a goal
kick.
CORNER KICK
 If the ball crosses the goal line with the defending
team touching the ball last then a corner kick is
awarded .
 A goal can be scored straight from a corner kick.

body of association football, futsal and beach
soccer. It is the highest governing body of
association football.
 FIFA is responsible for the organization and
promotion of association football's major
international tournaments, notably the World
Cup which commenced in 1930 and the Women's
World Cup which commenced in 1991

ALL INDIA FOOTBALL FEDERATION

• The All India Football Federation, simply known as the AIFF, is the


governing body of football in India under the  Ministry of Youth Affairs
and Sports, Government of India. Formed in 1935 founded at Darbhanga,
the federation was one of the founding members of the Asian Football
Confederation, the overseer of football in Asia.
• The AIFF sanctions and runs all competitive football tournaments and
leagues at a national level, namely the Indian Super League, I-
League and Super Cup. The federation also indirectly manages local
football competitions through the state associations. The federation is
also responsible for managing the India national football team, as well as
the women's team and the various youth national sides.
• The AIFF is also part of the South Asian Football Federation, the
organization that runs football in South Asia. The federation is currently
based in Dwarka, Delhi.
