Converse, Inverse and Contrapositive of An If-Then Statement

The document discusses the converse, inverse, and contrapositive of if-then statements. It provides examples of writing the converse as interchanging the hypothesis and conclusion, the inverse as negating the hypothesis and conclusion, and the contrapositive as negating and interchanging the hypothesis and conclusion. The document also asks which of four students provided the correct conditional statement for "An honest student does not cheat during examination" and the answer is the second student.

In Mrs. Mary’s Math class she asked her students to write the
conditional statement of “An
honest student does not cheat during examination.”. One of the
students answered “If you do not
cheat during examination, then you are honest student.”.
Another student raised hand and answered
“If you are honest student, then you do not cheat during
examination.” A third student raised his
hand and answered “If you are not honest student, then you
cheat during examination.”. And lastly,
a fourth student answered “If you cheat during examination,
then you are not honest student.”.
Which of the four students gives the correct conditional
statement of “An honest student does not cheat during
examination.”?

Yes it is the second student. The answer of

the first student is the converse of the
conditional statement, while the answers of
the the third and fourth students are the
inverse and contrapositive of the

Example: If it is an odd number , then the number word has an "E" in it.

Hypothesis Conclusion
It is an (p)
odd number (q)
The number word has
an "E" in it

Converse Statement:
if q, then p.
If the number word has an "E" in it, then it is an odd number.
Example: If it is an odd number , then the number word has an "E" in it.

Hypothesis Conclusion
It is an (p)
odd number (q)
The number word has
an "E" in it

Contrapositive Statement:
if not q, then not p.
If the number word has NO "E" in it, then it is NOT an odd
number.
Example: If it is an odd number , then the number word has an "E" in it.

Hypothesis Conclusion
It is an (p)
odd number (q)
The number word has
an "E" in it

Inverse Statement:
if not p, then not q.
If it is NOT an odd number, then the number word has NO
"E" in it.
Example: If a figure is a square, then it is a quadrilateral

Hypothesis Conclusion
a figure(p)
is a square (q)
it is a quadrilateral

Converse Statement:
if q, then p.
If a figure is a quadrilateral, then it is a square.
Example: If a figure is a square, then it is a quadrilateral

Hypothesis Conclusion
a figure(p)
is a square (q)
it is a quadrilateral

Contrapositive Statement:
if not q, then not p.
If a figure is NOT a quadrilateral, then it is NOT a square.
Example: If a figure is a square, then it is a quadrilateral

Hypothesis Conclusion
a figure(p)
is a square (q)
it is a quadrilateral

Inverse Statement:
if not p, then not q.
If a figure is NOT a square, then it is NOT a quadrilateral.
