Presentation: Layers in Autocad

The document discusses layers in AutoCAD. It defines what layers are, how they are used to organize a drawing by object type, and how they provide benefits like easier understanding, selection and modification of objects. It then describes how to create layers through the Layer Properties Manager and set properties like name, color, linetype and lineweight. It lists functions of layers such as on/off switching of visibility, freezing objects, and locking layers.

What is layer.?
One drawing can have many layers. And de-
pends on the complexity of the drawing, we
may have a few to dozens of layers.

We can use each layer to draw a specific object

type. For example, you can use Wall layer to
draw walls on it. Furniture layer to draw fur-
niture on it, and so on. AutoCAD supports
tens of thousands layers in a single drawing,
which is virtually unlimited.
When are We Using Layers?

The layering system is an essential

drawing management in AutoCAD, and
you should use layers in every drawing.
The common usage of layers is to draw
objects on a layer based on their func-
tion. Create all dimensions on a specific
layer. Create walls, doors, windows on
separate layers, and so on.
Why Are Layers Useful?
Layers can be useful in many ways.

1. First, because we draw objects on separate layers, it is

easier for you to understand the drawing. You can
quickly know an object type by checking the layer. Au-
toCAD drawings are just lines and arcs. Using layers
can make the drawing easier to understand.

2. Second, we don’t have to set every time properties for

same lineweight, color, linetype, and the other proper-
ties.
Why Are Layers Useful?
 3. Third, we can hide/show or lock/unlock a layer. It
means we can have greater control of your drawing.

 4. Fourth, using layers adds a better control to select

and modify objects. Let’s say you want to select all
partition walls in your drawing and copy them to the
next typical floor. AutoCAD doesn’t understand which
lines are partition walls. However, we can tell Auto-
CAD to select lines on the Partition Wall layer.
How to Create a Layer.?
 Click Home tab  Layers panel  Layer Properties. In
the Layer Properties Manager, click the
New Layer button.A layer name, such as LAYER1, is au-
tomatically added to the layer list.


5. The work may be in open ground such

as fields or it may be in congested ar-
eas such as near or on the public
roads, necessitating extensive watch-
ing, lightening, and controlling efforts,
etc.
How to Create a Layer.?

 Enter a new layer name by typing over the high-

lighted layer name.
 To change the properties, click icons. When you click
Color, Linetype, Lineweight, or Plot Style, a dialog box
is displayed.
 (Optional) Click in the Description column and enter
text.
 Click Apply to save your changes, or click OK to save
and close.

FUNCTIONS OF LAYER
 On/Off. Objects on turned-off layers are invisible, but they still hide ob-
jects when you use HIDE. When you turn layers on and off, the drawing
is not regenerated.
 Freeze/Thaw. Objects on frozen layers are invisible and do not hide
other objects.
How to Create a Layer.?

Lock the Objects on a Layer:- To lock the layer. After locking

layer can't be deleted.

Color of object on layer:- To differentiating different colors.

 Use Layers to Manage Complexity

   Assign a Default Color and Linetype to a Layer

Override Layer Properties in a Layout Viewport.
Save, Restore, and Edit Layer States.

Restore Layer Settings.
Edit Saved Layer Settings
Functions of Layers

 New LayerCreates a new layer. The list displays

a layer named LAYER1. You can edit this layer name immedi-
ately. The new layer inherits the properties of the currently se-
lected layer in the layer list (color, on or off state, and so on).
 Rename LayerRenames the layer.
 Delete LayerDeletes selected layers from the drawing file defi-
nition. You can delete only unreferenced layers.
Referenced layers include layers 0 and DEFPOINTS, layers con-
taining objects (including objects in block definitions), the cur-
rent layer, and xref-dependent layers.
 Change Description Adds a description or changes the text in
the description for the selected layer or filter. The description
for a filter is added to the filter and to all layers in the filter.
 Remove from Group FilterRemoves the selected layers from
the group layer filter that is selected in the tree view.
 ate
Functions of Layers
 Reconcile Layer Removes new layers from the Unrecon-
ciled New Layers filter. Available only when one or more
unreconciled layers is selected.
 Remove Viewport Overrides ForRemoves a single over-
ride property or all property overrides on selected layers
(or all layers).

New Layer Frozen in All Viewports Creates a
new layer and freezes it in all existing layout viewports and
new viewports.

VP Freeze Layer in All ViewportsFreezes the
selected layer in all existing layout viewports and new
viewports.
 VP Thaw Layer in All ViewportsThaws the
selected layer in all existing layout viewports and new
viewports.
Functions of Layers

 Clear AllRemoves selection from all items in the list view

except the most recently selected layer or filter.
 Select All but CurrentSelects everything displayed in the
list view except the current layer.
 Invert SelectionSelects selected. everything displayed in
the list view except the items that are currently
 Invert Layer FilterDisplays all layers that do not meet
the criteria in the selected layer property filter.
 Layer FiltersDisplays a list of layer filters, including All
and All Used Layers. Click a filter to apply it to the list view.
 Save Layer StatesDisplays the dialog box, in which you
save the layer state and layer property settings of all layers
in a drawing.
