WORD PROCESSING SOFTWARE
Word processing software is used to manipulate a text
document, such as a resume or a report.
Some of the functions of word processing software include:
 Creating, editing, saving and printing documents.
 Copying, pasting, moving and deleting text within a
document.
 Formatting text, such as font type, bolding, underlining or
italicizing.
 Creating and editing tables.
 Correcting spelling and grammar.
Example of Word Processing Software:
MS-Word, Wordpad, OpenOffice.org, etc.
SPREADSHEET
SOFTWARE
Spreadsheet Software allows users to perform
calculations.
A spreadsheet is a sheet of paper that shows
accounting or other data in rows and
columns. It is also referred to as a
worksheet.
Examples of Spreadsheet Software:
1. MS-Excel
2. Lotus 1-2-3, etc.
PRESENTATION
SOFTWARE
The software that is used to display information in the form
of a slide show is known as Presentation Software.
Presentation software is generally used for creating
slideshows that display information.
The software has three main components:
 Text editor for inputting and formatting text
 Facility for inserting graphics and other multimedia files
 Slideshow system for displaying the content
Examples of Presentation Software:
1. MS-PowerPoint
2. Open-Office, etc.
DATABASE SOFTWARE
Database software is a software program or
utility used for creating, editing and
maintaining database files and records.
Database software is also known as
database management software (DBMS).
Example of Database Software:
1. Oracle SQL
2. MS-Access, etc.
SPECIAL PURPOSE
SOFTWARE
Special Purpose Software is used to
complete very specific tasks.
It is more limited in what it will do in and
handles the specific needs of a particular
profession or business.
For example, turbo-tax (a tax preparation
package) is a special purpose application.
